The New England Revolution have two games left in the regular season and while they are getting healthier, head coach Marko Mitrovic will face some tough decisions.

On Wednesday, New England saw the good and the bad of players returning from injury. Starting off with the good, Luca Langoni and Ilay Feingold has some of their best performances since returning from injury.

Langoni had a great assist on Dor Turgeman's second goal, while Feingold recorded two assists - though Feingold said postgame he doesn't know if they really count as assists. Both players made an impact in the attack and helped the Revs secure three points.

“I think with [Langoni and Feingold], they’re game-after-game better and better," Mitrovic said after the win. "I think for Luca, after a long time we can see that his game fitness is much better. Before you perform, you have to have the ability to run in this game. Otherwise, no chance. That’s something that makes us happy about both of them, they’re getting more and more into their game fitness. We still have to be very aware with the minutes about them and not overload them. For example, with Ilay after his injury he was with the [Israel] national team. Now, playing after that, we still have to be cautious to not forget how long they were off the field. We’re happy with the timing. I mean, the whole season is important. But now that we get to the end of the season, we have more and more players available.”

Fellow outside back Will Sands said Feingold's crossing ability and vision stand out when he is on the ball.

"We have a lot of players that you can learn a lot from, and Ilay is one of those where, as an outside back, he's really good at going forward," Sands said. "He has a lot of chemistry with Dor Turgeman and he is always looking for him. His crossing ability is second to none. His vision going forward is really good and I think that's something that our team has benefited a lot from."

But it wasn't all good on Wednesday evening. New England watched a 2-0 lead evaporate in the second half.

New York's first goal was the result of Cade Cowell making Sands look silly and the left back failing to adequately close down on the winger. It was a quality strike but Sands could have done a better job defending.

The second goal was even more difficult to watch as Mamadou Fofana got nutmegged after being substituted into the match. It wasn't even an impressive pass from Adri Mehmeti it was more the center back completely misreading the ball.

This led to Julian Hall getting a clear opportunity on goal, and he didn't waste the chance. Luckily, New England managed to score a late goal to secure the win, but there are some concerning signs on the backline.

Center back is the biggest question mark. For almost the entire season, Ethan Kohler and Fofana were the preferred pairing but with Fofana getting injured, Joshua Wynder has impressed in a string of starts. Fofana still looks like a player looking to shake some rust off and Mitrovic will have to ponder opting for the hot hand or sticking with Fofana once the playoffs arive.

“I think through the whole season, that partnership first between Ethan [Kohler] and [Mamadou Fofana] really strengthened, and they have become strong partners there. And somehow, Josh [Wynder] came, and then [Wynder’s] first game, Mamadou got injured. And I know some of you guys ask me 'How are we going to play?' And sometimes, life gives you organic decisions, and I was like, ‘Okay, we have to play Josh and Ethan.’ And then with Josh, we had circumstances where Josh didn't play for a long time, and you can see game after game that his performance is improving, improving, and Josh is showing that he really has a high ceiling. Now Mamadou is back. We had a certain progression with the minutes. He played 15 minutes last game, now 30 minutes, and a decision on who is going to play will be there. I'm not thinking [about that] right now, but we are happy that we have players. Not just me, we have other defenders that are very reliable, and we believe and trust in all of them.”

Additionally, Sands also hasn't particularly looked great since getting hurt. It's increasingly likely that Peyton Miller will have to play further back than he has for most of the season.

Miller is a better defender – especially on the ground thanks to his speed – but the Revs will miss out on his attacking ability. The youngster will also need to be aware of not leaving his teammates all alone if Miller goes too far forward and possession is lost.

While it is great that New England is scoring goals, the backline concerns could prove to be what costs them a postseason run. They don't say 'defense wins championships' for no reason.

There is no better test than going up against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday. If New England can shut them down, there is no reason it can't stop any Eastern Conference team.

But Mitrovic needs to find out what guys are up for the task.
