After a difficult stint in Europe, New England Revolution center back Ethan Kohler is having arguably his best season as a pro. While flashy skill on the ball and goals are quick to take the spotlight, Kohler's consistency has made him a key piece of the 2026 squad.

Kohler has been a workhorse in the backline. Mamadou Fofana and the American have done well to make Matt Turner's life easier in goal. The duo has the ability to knock opponents off the ball, get in front of shots, and a relative lack of getting caught out of possession.

It can be easy to forget that Kohler was coming to New England at a relatively low point. He detailed his struggles in Europe prior to the start of the season.

“My time overseas was not trivial by any means," Kohler told media. "I think what I got most out of it was learning how to deal with hardship and struggle. Being in a foreign country where you don’t know anyone and you don’t speak the language, you have this sense of isolation, and your struggles go beyond just the football part. It kind of made me grow up a bit quicker. Outside of all the football things I learned and the technique I learned trying to emulate the players playing at the highest level, I think my biggest takeaway was learning how to deal with adversity."

Coming to New England has proven to be a massive success. The 21-year-old has won 40 aerial duels and blocked 27 shots so far in 2026. It isn't a shock that New England has allowed the sixth-fewest goals so far this season.

But Kohler is also smooth on the ball, which is especially crucial for center backs in the modern game. He can pick out some impressive passes and help New England build out of the back.

These skills are especially important when Kohler is shifted up the field and is deployed as a midfielder rather than a center back. Whether it be due to injuries or international call-ups, the 21-year-old has stepped into these situations and done a good job.

"When you score goals and assists, it's somehow easier to get in the spotlight," Revolution head coach Marko Mitrovic said when asked by The Blazing Musket about Kohler. "But having someone like Ethan, it’s not just that he can play multiple positions, as you mentioned, but we can also speak about his mentality and the mindset of the group. I think Ethan is a great reflection of us, and he’s somebody that if we speak about, coming in every day and maximizing every day that we have ahead of us, that's what Ethan does, and with a strong focus. Ethan is, as I love to say, one of those players that, if you need the right answer, you always go to Ethan with a question and you'll get that, because he's so focused and always aware of what he has to do. I think players like Ethan are always appreciated in the locker room from everyone, not just from the players and from the staff, but I think from the people as a club, because they set and then keep certain standards that are very valuable for environment.”

While Mitrovic is happy to see Kohler getting praise, the center back is quick to turn the attention on the coaching staff.

“It has been a great season for me personally," Kohler said. "I think a lot of the credit goes to the staff, and to Marko [Mitrović] especially, for having trust in me and for building me up because I came into this season not playing regularly at the club level. I think I’m very aligned with him tactically and from a philosophy standpoint, and he and the rest of the staff have guided me. I’m just very happy that I’m able to make an impact and help the team. I think, for me, that’s what I’ve been most proud of from this season.”

With how well Kohler is performing, it is hard not to think about his international future. At just 21 years old, he has plenty of time to re-emerge as a center back option.

The Revolution recently saw Peyton Miller and Brooklyn Raines earn senior team debuts; maybe Kohler could be the next.

"I think what Ethan can do is just do what he’s doing and do his best day after day," Mitrovic said when asked about Kohler's international future by Seth Macomber. "There are other people that will have to make their decisions, and the only way you can impact those decisions is being at your best all the time. That's what Ethan does, and he just has to be patient with that. But also, if we speak about the long career that we all believe Ethan will have, this is just a very short period of time. You have to sustain the same level of focus, same level of mentality, same level of your performances, in order to get there. There is no shortcut. Now, I strongly believe if Ethan keeps doing [what] he's doing now, he'll get his opportunity and his time."
