Sunday saw Pablo Moreira and New England Revolution II return to Beirne Stadium as they welcomed Philadelphia Union II to town. Revs II suffered a 4-3 loss, and a key player is likely to be sidelined.

Moreira made three changes from last week’s 2-1 win over CT United FC. Max Weinsten returned between the pipes behind the back three of Gabe Dahlin, Jake Shannon, and first-teamer Keegan Hughes. Cristiano Oliveira, Logan Azar, Carlos Zambrano, and a returning Javaun Mussenden comprised the midfield behind the attacking trio of Makai Wells, Myles Morgan, and Matthew Jean Baptiste.

Weinstein came up big in the seventh minute when he was alert as Mathias De Paula curled a cross centrally from the right flank that led to Malik Jakupovic sending a bouncing header goalward, which forced Weinstein to make an incredible save to keep the game level.

Concern arose in the ninth minute as Keegan Hughes suffered a knock that forced the first-team defender to end his day incredibly early. Academy prospect Levi Katsell was the one to come on in place of Hughes.

Philadelphia capitalized on the corner kick in the 10th minute as the ball deflected off Katsell and redirected to Jordan Griffin, who headed the ball to the right side of the net and in to give the road side an early 1-0 lead.

Katsell nearly found the equalizer in the 13th minute when Jean Baptiste got onto a deflected shot and slotted the ball back into the path of Katsell, who lasered a shot to the upper-right corner that forced Pierce Holbrook to bat the ball away from danger.

Revolution II were determined to claw their way back into the game. It came to fruition in the 15th minute when a poor turnover from Philly led Revolution II to fluidly move the ball around the final third, which eventually led to Wells slotting a ball centrally from the left flank that found Morgan, who tapped it home to notch his team-leading 11th goal of the season to level the match at one apiece.

Morgan nearly found his second goal of the day in the 27th minute when Dahlin won the ball in New England’s defensive half and advanced the ball forward before slotting it forward into the path of Morgan. The forward darted downfield and nearly found himself one-on-one with Holbrook, but the Philly defense recovered just in time as Morgan was forced to take a dribbling shot from distance that Holbrook scooped up.

Philadelphia caught New England’s defense lacking in the 27th minute as some give-and-go passes between Malik Jakupovic, Stas Korzeniowski, and Kellan LeBlanc led to Korzeniowski receiving a pass from Jakupovic and one-tapping it into the path of LeBlanc, who got onto the pass and slotted it past Weinstein and in to give Union II the 2-1 lead.

Troubling scenes arose in the 32nd minute as a meeting of legs between Zambrano and Rafael Uzcátegui led to Zambrano collapsing to the pitch in agony. Wells found himself in the referee’s book with a yellow card in the 45th minute following a confrontation during the pause in play. After an extended period of time, Zambrano was placed into an air cast and was carted off the field. Aarin Prajapati came on in place of the injured Zambrano in the first minute of stoppage time.

New England’s day went from bad to worse in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Wells was issued his second yellow card of the day following his challenge on Kellan LeBlanc as New England found themselves down to 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Jean Baptiste nearly found the leveler in the 10th minute of stoppage time when he got on the ball and attempted to find the bottom-left corner from the top of the box, but Holbrook dove in time to make the stop. Katsell had the chance to level things in the 11th minute of stoppage time when Aarin Prajapati broke down the right flank and cut the ball centrally. Katsell attempted to find the upper-right corner, but put the effort just wide.

Despite being a man down and the emotions of the Zambrano injury, New England kept up the fight, and it prevailed in the 16th minute of stoppage time when Oliveira got under a cross from Prajapati and headed the ball into the upper-left corner to level the match at two apiece.

It didn’t last long as a series of passes led to LeBlanc getting on the end of a deflected ball and slotting it home to give Union II a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

The fight kept coming from this Revolution II side, and it showed in the 66th minute when Oliveira got onto the ball and withstood the Philly pressure before slotting the ball back to Dahlin, who curled a shot to the upper-right corner from an incredible distance to level the match at three apiece.

Philadelphia nearly broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when a counterattack opportunity led to LeBlanc rushing toward goal, as he found himself one-on-one with Weinsten. LeBlanc attempted to find the upper-half of the net, but put too much on it as he sailed it just over the crossbar and out.

Momentum swung New England’s way in the 81st minute whenRevs II was awarded apenalty kick. Morgan stepped to the spot as he looked to inch closer to club history while giving New England its first lead of the game. Morgan attempted to find the right side of the net, but Holbrook read it perfectly as he dove to bat the ball away from danger and keep the deadlock intact.

It came back to bite New England in the 84th minute as a long ball up to LeBlanc on the left flank led to him slotting the ball centrally to Stas Korzeniowski. Despite having an initial attempt blocked, Korzeniowski got onto the rebound and slotted it home to give Philadelphia a 4-3 lead in the closing minutes of the match.

Two changes came in the 90th minute as Sharod George and Shuma Sasaki replaced Jean Baptiste and Katsell.

It’s a quick turnaround for Revolution II as they return to action on Wednesday, traveling down to South Beach to face Inter Miami CF II on August 19 at 7:00 PM ET.
