Transfer Rumor: Matt Turner Gaining MLS Interest
Could the Turner Train make another stop at Gillette Stadium?
According to The Athletic, former New England Revolution and current USMNT starting goalkeeper Matt Turner could make a return to MLS.
Paul Taylor reports that former Benfica goalkeeper Odi Vlachodimos and Turner could leave Nottingham Forest after struggling in the previous English Premier League season. Turner appeared in 21 matches for The Trees where he made over 50 saves while conceding nearly 30 goals and winning just five matches. Vlachodimos made seven appearances with just one EPL win to his name.
“There is interest from the MLS in USMNT goalkeeper Turner, but the finances involved might be prohibitive,” Taylor reports. “Forest are looking to recoup the initial £4.5 million they paid Benfica for Greek international Vlachodimos, who is frustrated at his lack of opportunities and is particularly keen on a move.”
Obviously, Revolution fans would love to see Turner come back to New England. Even after the recent acquisition of Aljaz Ivacic, fans would want the front office to spend as much money as possible to acquire the goalkeeper.
Turner left New England after making over 100 stars for the Revolution and securing 22 career shutouts in seven seasons with New England. The 2021 Supporters’ Shield campaign was a breakout year for the goalkeeper on both the club and international level as he was named 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year along with receiving an All-Star nod and MLS Best XI selection.
Any MLS team in need of a goalkeeper would drop a bag on Turner. The competition will be fierce for his services as it will likely include European clubs as well.
But playing time should play an important factor in Turner’s next home. He needs to get consistent playing time if he wants to continue to be the USMNT’s No. 1.
So while it might seem like a longshot, there is a chance that Turner could come back to the Revolution.
While we loved having Turner in goal, frankly we need to spend money elsewhere., IMHO.
You can't just keep adding goalkeepers (3 in less than a year, by my count) - Ivacic is doing the job for now, Ravas has skills if he can round out his game and, as pointed out, we have bigger needs elsewhere.
