Revs II Victorious In 2024 Home Opener
New England look to continue their strong home campaign in first match at Gillette for the 2024 season.
Revolution II returned to Gillette Stadium for their first home match of the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season, hosting Carolina Core FC; an independent side entering its first year in the league. In 2023 New England put on a dominant display at home, putting up a 8-1-5 record in Foxboro.
New England made three changes to the starting XI from its opening match against Philadelphia Union II, as Jack Panyotou, Colby Quinones, and Malcolm Fry earned starts.
It only took three minutes for Fry to find the opener and put Revs II in the lead, getting on the end of a well-taken Panayotou corner and beating the keeper with a close ranger header.
In the 37th minute Carolina were able to find an equalizer thanks to David Polanco. His shot from distance slipped past the outstretched hands of New England keeper Max Weinstein.
New England made its first change of the game in the 40th minute as Patrick Leal checked in for Maciel.
Both teams continued to battle it out in search of a tie-breaking goal, each finding their fair share of opportunities but none of the shots seemed to fall in their favor.
In the 58th minute it was Panayotou who doubled the lead for the hosts after finding himself in the right place as Fry’s initial shot was denied by the keeper, allowing Panayotou to slot the ball into the back of the net.
Revs II made two changes in the 63rd minute with Cristiano Oliveira and Gevork Diarbian entering the match in place of Andrej Bjelajac and Fry. Â
The home team made its final pair of substitutions in the 80th minute as Luke Borovic — who made his professional soccer debut — and Eric Klein replaced Victor Souza and Panayotou.
Following Sunday’s win, Revs II currently sit in 9th place in the Eastern Conference. They will hit the road as they head to NKU Soccer Stadium to face-off against FC Cincinnati II on Wednesday, April 10th with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 PM EST.
Strong game for McIntosh, Leal looked sharp again and hopefully Maciel hasn't suffered a big setback with his injury.
Nice to leave Gillette with a win for the first time this season!
