New England Revolution II:
After a horrendous 2024 season, 2025 has seen Revolution II get off to a hot start! Revs II come into Wednesday’s match in third place in the Eastern Conference with an undefeated record of 2-0-1.
Not only do Revs II hold an impressive record through their first three matches, but they also enter the match against Orlando with a lengthy shutout streak. Revs II have kept their opposition off the board for 287 minutes. The last goal they conceded came in the 73rd minute of their 3-1 loss to Crew 2 in their 2024 finale.
While Revolution II has gotten off to a hot start, it will be interesting to see if Revs II can overcome the road woes experienced in 2024. In their 14 road games last year, the team went a horrific 0-13-1 and was outscored 33 to 14.
One thing head coach Richie Williams has emphasized this season has been his team’s commitment to defending. It’s something that’s showing up in the stats.
On top of their zero goals conceded, Revs II are also tied for fourth in interceptions per match with 13.3, rank ninth in clearances per match with 23.3, and rank eighth in saves per match with four.
While Revolution II is performing well as a unit, some individuals find themselves at the top of several statistics.
Forward Marcos Dias is in a five-way tie for third most offensive contributions with four. He’s also tied for third in assists with two.
Defender Hesron Barry leads MLS NEXT Pro in interceptions per match with four. Barry isn’t the only Revs II player ranking high in that stat. Allan Oyirwoth is tied for fourth with 3.5. Defender Keegan Hughes ranks fifth in clearances per match with 7.6.
Finally, goalkeeper JD Gunn is tied for the most clean sheets with two, ranks first in save percentage with 100%, and is tied for third for saves per match with 4.5.
Orlando City B:
Like Revolution II, 2025 has gotten off to a good start for Manuel Goldberg and Orlando City B. OCB comes into Wednesday one spot behind Revs II in fourth place with eight points and a 2-1-1 record with one shootout victory.
OCB comes into Wednesday on short rest. Saturday saw Orlando suffer their first loss of the new season following a 2-0 loss on the road to Chattanooga FC. April 5th’s loss also marked the first time Orlando City B had been shutout since their August 11th, 2024 meeting against Crown Legacy FC.
2022 SuperDraft pick Shak Mohammed has led the charge for Orlando so far as the first team prospect leads OCB with two goals in three appearances this season.
Orlando’s defense has gotten off to a rocky start. Through four matches, they’ve completed seven interceptions per match, which ranks for the second-fewest. They also complete the least successful tackles per match with 6.3.
They’re also tied for the ninth most saves per match with 3.5 and average the fifth most clearances per match with 27.
Despite the early success results-wise, their offense has also looked rough to start the season. They average 41.6% possession, which ranks the third lowest. They average five shots on target per match, which ties for 13th.
Their passing is not much better. Orlando averages 281.8 completed passes, which ranks for the third-fewest. They also rank 23rd for accurate long balls per match with 21.8.
Previous Meetings:
Wednesday will mark the ninth all-time meeting between New England and Orlando, which dates back to both sides’ time in USL League One. Revs II have the historical advantage in the series as they hold a 4-2-2 record over OCB.
Their inaugural meeting came on August 7, 2020, when goals from Wilfredo Rivera and Kenji Tanaka led Orlando to their first of two wins over Revs II. Justin Rennicks’ 46th-minute strike was the deciding factor on September 26. 2020, as Revs II secured all three points following a 1-0 victory.
Their inaugural MLS NEXT Pro meeting on April 24, 2022, was uneventful. Neither side scored as things ended in a scoreless draw. OCB secured the additional point following a 4-3 shootout win.
The next three meetings saw Revs II walk away victorious after picking up a 2-1 win on June 11, 2022, a 2-0 shutout win on September 22, 2022, and a thrilling 5-4 win on August 9, 2023.
Despite overall success, recent history has swayed Orlando City B’s direction as Revs II have not picked up a win in the past two meetings. September 7, 2023, saw both sides find the net as things ended in a 1-1 draw. Revs II secured the additional point following a 3-2 shootout victory.
Their most recent meeting came on September 15, 2024, when goals from Alex Freeman and Jack Lynn led to Orlando City B securing a 2-0 shutout victory.
