After excelling as a youth player for Preston North End, 19-year-old Felipe Rodriguez Gentile is looking for a platform to showcase his ability. He believes he has found that with Portland Hearts of Pine.

Rodriguez Gentile broke out during the 2022/23 season when he scored five goals in a 6-1 win over Rotherham United in the FA Youth Cup. He netted two more during Preston's quarterfinal run, making him the second-highest scorer in the tournament (7).

The striker earned a professional contract with Preston after scoring three times during the 2023-24 preseason. Although he had several bench appearances – which he looks back on fondly – he never made his debut in the English Championship.

In January 2026, he was loaned to AFC Fylde in the English National League North. Here, he collected seven goals and five assists in 18 games, helping win promotion to the English National League.

"Every week was super important, playing for points," Rodriguez Gentile said of his time with Fylde. "It was really a completely different experience to what I was used to. It was probably one of the happiest times I've had in football. Those three months of playing for promotion and ending up getting it, and then going on holiday with all the teammates, it was amazing."

Rodriguez Gentile noted that he can play "a bit of everywhere" as long as he's "in and around the goal box." He's comfortable as a winger, striker, or 10.

Head coach Bobby Murphy called him a 9-and-a-half. Not only can he run in behind, creating space for the players underneath him, but he has a knack for finding the back of the net.

"He's just one of those kids that – if you watch his highlights – just pops up and scores goals," Murphy said.

Despite being 5'10, Rodriguez Gentile isn't afraid to tussle with bigger opponents. Murphy said the six years he spent in Liverpool make him a bit of a Scouser.

Rodriguez Gentile said he "loves a good challenge" but also likes to use his movement to deceive larger opponents.

Though he had offers to sign U-21 contracts with English Premier League and Championship teams, Rodriguez Gentile opted to move overseas.

"It's first-team experience, which is super important at my age," Rodriguez Gentile said. "I just needed somewhere new, like a breath of fresh air.

"Honestly, [Hearts] are a growing club. It's going to get bigger every year. The fans are amazing, which is part of it for me. I like to play in front of fans. I like to score goals in front of fans. It's just a platform where I could show my football in front of people."

Rodriguez Gentile enjoyed his first 48 hours in the state. A tour of the city exposed many soccer-loving fans proudly wearing Hearts gear. His first training session was capped with oyster shucking.

"I think I had eight oysters total," Rodriguez Gentile said with a smile. "They are really amazing, full of flavor. And I've learned to crack them open today as well. I got taught by a 12-year-old kid. It was a really good experience."

Rodriguez Gentile is available to play in Sunday's game against Forward Madison, though it will take time for him to be 90-minute fit.

The final 13 games will be important for Hearts, who sit ten points below the playoff line. Rodriguez Gentile is ready to do all that he can to make a late push.

"It's just about making sure I involve myself correctly with the group, and do as much as I can to help, either with scoring goals, pressing, assisting, whatever I can to help the team," Rodriguez Gentile said.

The attacker isn't thinking much beyond that.

Maybe he will return to Europe one day, or play in the higher divisions of American soccer. For now, he's happy for the opportunity to play for Hearts.

"As long as I'm improving every day, becoming a better player and better person every day, football will make its own path," Rodriguez Gentile said.
