Recap: Revs II Suffers Second Straight Loss
It was a night to forget for Revs II after conceding six goals to conference rivals NYCFC II.
New England Revolution II traveled to Belson Stadium for a Sunday night showdown against New York City FC II. New England made a total of seven changes to its starting line-up following a loss to Cincinnati FC 2, as Jacob Jackson, Colby Quiñones, Joshua Bolma, Jack Panayotou, Luka Borovic, Olger Escobar, and Gevork Diarbian found themselves in the night’s starting XI.
New England got off to a strong start, striking first in just the 8th minute after Diarbian was able to play a ball into Panayotou in the center of New York’s box, finding the back of the net with a well-placed shot from close range.
The Revs would once against find their lead short lived as Jonathan Jimenez responded with a brace, scoring his first and second goals of the MLS Next Pro season in the 11th and 16th minutes.
The hosts added a third goal in the 33rd minute in the form of a long-distance strike from Máximo Carrizo, scoring his first goal of the 2024 campaign.
Revs II made a pair of changes to start the second half as Marcos Dias and Maciel entered the match for Quiñones and Malcolm Fry.
In the 67th minute New England made their second set of substitutions as Patrick Leal and Alexis Monis replaced Escobar and Borovic.
Diarbian was able to pull one back for New England, scoring his first goal for Revolution II in the 67th minute, beating the New York keeper with a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner of the net. This also marks the first professional goal for the former Vermont Green FC forward.
An unfortunate deflection in the 72nd minute saw the hosts extend their lead once again, as Taylor Calheira’s strike bounced into the back of New England’s net.
New England made its final change of the game in the 77th minute as Steban Lopera checked in for Bolma.
New York tallied a fifth goal in the 80th minute as Jonathan Shore was able to get off the close range shot after his defender attempted to go to ground to break up the incoming cross.
Then in the 86th minute NYCFC II were awarded a penalty with Jackson receiving a yellow card for dissent as New England argued the call. Ronald Arevalo was able to convert, bringing New York’s total for the night to six goals.
Following the night’s result Revs II sit 13th in the East with just one win so far on the season and a -5 goal differential. Only four games into the season, there is still plenty of time for the team to work out the kinks and attempt to return to their winning form from the 2023 season.
New England continue its road trip when they travel to York Lions Stadium in Toronto to face-off against Toronto FC II on April 19th.
