Matt Turner might be the backup goalkeeper for the USMNT at this World Cup, but he's probably the best baseball player in the talent pool for head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Which comes in handy when your national team coach is going to be throwing out the first pitch at a Mariners game to have a former high school shortstop on the roster to give you some pointers on form and technique. Also probably why Turner can throw a soccer ball with Tom Brady levels of accuracy to start counter attacks.

Now we've seen Matt Turner's prowess at batting practice before, he nailed a BP homer in St. Louis a few years back, so getting a few swings in the nets under the stadium is nothing new.

Anyway, Poch nailed the first pitch mostly because he had an excellent teacher, though probably just a smidge high to be called a strike, but we can forgive our head coach considering it's possible he'd never touched a baseball until yesterday. The United States will play Belgium in their Round of 16 matchup from Lumen Seattle Stadium on July 6th at 8pm.
Editor's Note: It was from the front of mound.

The USMNT have reportedly offered Poch a new contract to extend past this World Cup so it's entirely possible he could do a first pitch tour over the next four years and improve his form.
