The New England Revolution bolstered its backline on Thursday with the addition of central defender Tylon Smith on loan from English Championship side Queens Park Rangers through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season. The deal includes a purchase option.
“Tylon has built a strong foundation through both his club and youth national team experience," Revolution general manager and chief soccer officer Chris Tierney said in a statement. "We’re confident that this is the ideal environment for Tylon to continue his development and we look forward to welcoming him to New England.”
Smith began his professional career in his native South Africa with Stellenbosch FC’s Academy before ascending to the club’s first team. His time with Stellenbosch saw Smith help the club secure the 2023-24 PSL Reserve League title and the 2024 Premier League Next Generation Cup.
The South African defender made the leap to Europe on July 23, 2025, when he completed a move to QPR. Since arriving, Smith has made 10 appearances across the senior and U21 levels.
"He is someone who is very calm, very composed on the ball," Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović said. "Also, he's a great athlete. He's very fast; his athleticism is something that is one of his strengths. The way we want to play when we have higher line, when we are in countermeasures, I don't think that's going to be an issue for him to cover the space; he's very comfortable doing that. Obviously, senior games are something different, and that's something that, as I said, I want to see and learn more about how much he's ready in this moment and how fast he can start helping the team, which we really believe he can do it as fast as possible. Again, I don't want to put any pressure. He's a very young guy, changing another country again, and those are not easy things for athletes. Sometimes we forget how old they are, and we want to help him when he comes here to adapt to our environment as soon as possible."
Smith has flourished on the international stage with the South Africa Under-20s. 2025 saw Smith and the South Africa U20s advance to the Round of 16 in the FIFA U-20 World Cup after finishing second in Group E. South Africa’s run ended following a 3-1 loss to Colombia.
Mitrović got a first-hand look at Tylon Smith on October 5th, 2025, as Smith clocked a full 90 minutes in South Africa’s 2-1 group stage victory over the United States.
Smith also featured for the South Africa U20s in the 2025 U-20 African Cup of Nations, where he played every single minute in South Africa’s run to clinching the title.
"Tylon is a player that we believe has a high potential," Mitrović told media members on Thursday. "Tylon is someone that the first time I learned about him was for qualifiers for U20s World Cup when I was watching African Confederation under 20s, and later we played against South Africa in our group stage. We believe that he has a high potential. Obviously, he doesn't have a big amount of professional games. We want to see how much we can help him to grow as a player and how much he can help us as a team, but without setting high expectations because he's a young athlete changing country and it's a new challenge for him, and we are here to support him and help him to find his success as soon as possible."
