Sunday saw Pablo Moreira and his Revolution II side handle business on the road when they walked out of Reese Stadium with all three points following a 2-1 victory over regional rivals CT United. Here are three thoughts.
1 - Tough Test
One of the disadvantages of playing independent sides in MLS NEXT Pro is they tend to have rosters on the older/more experienced side, and that was the case for CT, who came into the match amidst a five-game winning streak.
On top of the mismatch, Revs II were at a slightly greater disadvantage, as several key names were unavailable due to injury.
Despite CT holding a slight advantage in possession, New England were really methodical and patient in their ball movement, especially in their defensive half, which really threw CT off its rhythm throughout the match and nearly led to some good chances.
Defense as a whole has been a real strong suit for New England, as the club ranks seventh in interceptions per match (9.8), seventh in tackles per match (18.6), and 13th in clearances per match (20.1). 2026 has also seen Revolution II concede 24 goals, which is tied for the third-fewest in MLS NEXT Pro.
While the reinforcements have stepped up in big ways in recent weeks, I’m excited to see the backline return to full health as we push closer to the end of the regular season and the playoffs!
2 - Baptiste’s Boom
Revolution Academy forward Matthew Jean Baptiste has burst onto the scene in recent weeks. Since his June 7th debut, Jean Baptiste has registered an impressive four goals and an assist in 512 minutes of action, which includes his opening goal against CT eight minutes into what would turn into a 2-1 win for New England.
Considering the Revolution’s struggles at the forward position in recent years, it’s exciting to see a young prospect like Jean Baptiste thriving. After his recent run of form, I hope New England’s front office can work out a way to ensure the 17-year-old sticks around in New England.
It’s a small sample size, but if Matthew Jean Baptiste can keep this level of development up, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him eventually ascend all the way up the Pro Player Pathway and one day join the first team sometime down the road.
3 - Morgan’s Magnificence
Newcomer Myles Morgan has been an absolute game-changer for this Revolution II side in 2026 as the former Toronto FC II and Whitecaps2 product netted his 10th goal of the season to etch his name alongside Jordan Adebayo-Smith, Liam Butts, and Marcos Dias as the only players to reach double-digit goals in a single season.
With seven games left in the regular season, Morgan finds himself on the cusp of club history as he is three goals away from tying Liam Butts’ single-season scoring record of 13 set in 2025.
Coming into the season, I was a bit concerned about where New England would find its goals following the departures of names like Liam Butts, Marcos Dias, and Gevork Diarbian, but Myles Morgan has offered a great sense of relief in the goals department.
Hopefully we see Morgan maintain this goalscoring form through the remainder of the regular season and into the playoffs.
