Sunday saw Revolution II’s four-game unbeaten run snapped after goals in the closing minutes of each half led to reigning MLS NEXT Pro Cup champions Red Bull New York II.

Lapses were a major issue for Revs II on Sunday, costing them three points. It all started in first half stoppage time when goalkeeper Tobias Szewczyk lobbed a bouncing ball downfield that led to Roald Mitchell darting past a pair of defenders, getting onto the ball, and chipping it over JD Gunn. Then in the closing minutes as a foul on Sheridan McNish led to a free kick just outside the box. Andy Rojas capitalized by rocketing the ball through the New England Revolution II wall and into the back of the net to secure the win for the road side.

Moreira highlighted how those lapses were detrimental on the day. They were also evident on the offensive side as well, as New England was just a hair off when it came to generating chances.

“I thought when we did win the ball and connect those first two passes to then get into transition, I thought that was a little sloppy," the head coach said. "I think that was the tale of the day, because if we connect those passes, we have a lot better opportunities to go, but unfortunately, we were a little sloppy and not able to take advantage of those situations.”

With the first team preparing for their U.S. Open Cup match against Rhode Island FC, Pablo Moreira had to reach deep and call up some Academy prospects. One eye-catching name was 15-year-old midfielder Logan Azar, who not only made his professional debut but got his first career start. Moreira told The Blazing Musket that Azar got the start on Sunday because he thought he deserved the start after seeing Azar play at the Generation Adidas tournament a few weeks ago.

Sunday also saw Academy prospects like Sheridan McNish, Josh Macedo, Makai Wells, and Judah Siqueira see time in the fixture. Moreira highlighted the significance of these types of moments for Academy prospects.

Regardless of how Sunday’s match played out, the more important matter was the organization continuing its support for the Olivia Knighton Foundation, founded by assistant and goalkeeper coach Bad Knighton. To pay tribute to Olivia and the foundation, coaches and players donned commemorative armbands featuring the organization’s logo.

Following the match, Moreira emotionally described what Olivia and the foundation have meant to the organization.

“It's a beautiful foundation," Moreira said. "It means so much to us, our staff, the club, Brad, his family, his wife, everyone that set up the foundation. It's just a beautiful thing once you know what it stands for. I was never able to meet Olivia, but the light that she shines every day on Brad, her family, yesterday at Gillette, and today. Our locker room was decked out with the logo. She means a lot to us. She continues with us and the light that she brings and the family brings. man. no words for it, but a beautiful thing and so, so happy to be a part of it.”

Revolution II’s first road game will take place on April 18 when they travel to ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, to take on two-time MLS NEXT Pro Cup Finalists Columbus Crew 2 at 3 PM ET.
