Transfer Rumors: Additional Details On Possible Djordje Petrović Move
Can European club's account for Petrović's demands? Only time will tell.
While little to no movement has been made since The Athletic’s Tom Bogert reported Manchester United’s interest in Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović, a new report from Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella suggests what it would take for Manchester United or any club to acquire the 23-year-old Serbian keeper.
According to Kinsella, the Revolution value Petrović at £24 million, which equates to close to $30.5 million. The supposed fee would eclipse MLS' outgoing transfer fee record, which Atlanta United set in January of 2019 when they dealt Miguel Almirón to Premier League side Newcastle for £24 million.
Another implication of whether and where Djordje Petrović makes a move is his positioning on the depth chart. According to Kinsella, Petrović is only considering propositions in which he would be the number one choice in goal.
Considering Petrović’s demands, Manchester United may be out of the race considering their intention to retain David De Gea. Kinsella also noted Chelsea was the front-runner in the Petrović sweepstakes but may lose their footing considering Mauricio Pochettino’s desire to keep Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s starting keeper as they look for someone comfortable to serve in the backup role.
It’s unclear if any other clubs who can meet the criteria have entered the race for Petrović, but expect some to enter throughout the summer leading into what could be a pivotal offseason for Bruce Arena and the New England Revolution.
