Rumor: Revolution Interested in Luis Díaz
Could the Costa Rican winger make a return to Major League Soccer?
Caleb Porter could reportedly reunite with one of his players from his Columbus Crew days as Estefan Monge reports the New England Revolution is interested in Costa Rican winger Luis Díaz.
After starting his career with AD Guanacasteca, Díaz had spells with multiple Costa Rican teams, including Municipal Grecia and CS Herediano, before moving to the United States to join Columbus as a Young Designated Player on July 2nd, 2019.
Díaz appeared in 93 matches for the Crew. He tallied six goals and 14 assists while helping secure an MLS Cup alongside Caleb Porter in 2020.
Díaz’s time in Columbus ended on September 5th, 2023, when the Crew waived him. He didn’t remain a free agent for long as the Colorado Rapids claimed him off of waivers on September 8th, 2023.
The Costa Rican winger clocked 90 minutes in three appearances with the Rapids before becoming a free agent following the 2023 season.
Díaz returned to his native Costa Rica on December 16th when he inked a deal with Deportivo Saprissa. Since his return, Díaz has 48 appearances, where he tallied four goals and nine assists over 2,334 minutes.
News of New England’s interest in Díaz comes after the 26-year-old was kept out of Saprissa’s December 15th meeting with CS Herediano. According to Kevin Jiménez, Díaz was left out “due to technical issues.” Jiménez added that Díaz “has had attitudes that have not pleased the team.”
It’s uncertain if the Revs will turn this reported interest into action, but it’s something to keep an eye on as Díaz nears the end of his contract with Saprissa.
