Revs II Recap: Revolution II 0 - Orlando 2
Another loss on the road sees Revs II's winless streak extend to 12 games.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II hit the road on Sunday when they squared off against Orlando City B inside Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, as Revs II looked for their first three points since June 14 and their first road win of the 2024 season following back-to-back draws and shootout victories.
Williams made one change from last Sunday’s meeting against Toronto. Max Weinstein started in goal behind the back line of Malcolm Fry, Tiago Suarez, Damario McIntosh, and Victor Souza, who made his first start since June 1st. 16-year-old Cristiano Oliveira made a second-consecutive start, joining Maciel and Eric Klein in the midfield behind the attacking trio of Gevork Diarbian, Marcos Dias, and Joshua Bolma.
The Revs attack nearly got on the board in the 19th minute. After Maciel sprung a ball forward on the right, McIntosh got onto the ball and attempted to slot the ball back into the box. Despite having two attackers, the cutback failed to reach a target as it rolled aimlessly inside the box. Klein ran onto the ball and attempted a shot, but it deflected off a defender and out for a corner.
Revs II nearly capitalized on the ensuing corner when Bolma’s corner kick fell to an open Dias inside the box. Dias leaped into the air and attempted to head the ball in, but his strike lacked accuracy as it sailed over the bar and out.
McIntosh became the first player to enter the referee’s book as he received a yellow card in the 21st minute after committing a foul on Yutaro Tsukada. Diarbian saw himself enter the book in the 30th minute when he forcibly dragged Shakur Mohammed down on the counterattack.
Weinstein came up huge for Revs II in the 30th minute when the ensuing free kick found its way to Alex Freeman, who put a weak yet dangerous shot on frame that Weinstein dove to stop.
Despite some good opportunities from both teams, neither side found the advantage in the opening 45 as the first half ended in a scoreless draw.
Despite the strong fight, Revs II succumbed to Orlando City B’s attack in the 50th minute. After receiving the ball from Mohammed, Alex Freeman drove along the goalline and slotted home a shot past Weinstein from a tough angle.
Revolution II’s night nearly got worse in the 56th minute when a counterattack led to Freeman slotting a ball centrally to Jack Lynn, who surprisingly put too much on it as it sailed over the bar.
Williams went all out in the 58th minute, making a quartet of changes. Alex Monis, Colby Quiñones, Sage Kinner, and Liam Butts entered as Oliveira, Diarbian, Souza, and Fry’s nights came to an end.
After missing a golden opportunity in the 56th, Lynn didn’t miss in the 60th. Jergio Kocevski got things going when he sprung a ball forward into a pocket of space. Lynn turned on the jets and got to the ball before slotting it past Weinstein and in to double Orlando City B’s lead.
Revolution II’s final change came in the 77th minute when Olger Escobar replaced Maciel.
New England’s best chance of the night came in the 84th minute when Escobar slotted a ball forward to Bolma. After getting onto the ball, Bolma attempted to tap it over Carlos Mercado, but the Orlando keeper deflected the shot to put away the scoring opportunity.
Escobar nearly found himself on the scoresheet in stoppage time when he unleashed a shot from distance that Mercado stretched to save.
After a strong first half, things ccrumbled as Orlando City B found the net twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory as Revolution II’s winless run extended to 12 games while their 2024 road record extended to 0-12-1.
Revolution II returns to action on when they host Chattanooga FC at 3:00 pm ET in the 2024 Gillette Stadium finale.
