New England Revolution II:
Revs II comes into Thursday’s match just four days after securing a positive result in their season opener against Philadelphia Union.
Thanks to JD Gunn’s five saves, Revs II held off a potent Philadelphia offense and secured a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. With both sides taking a point, we headed to a penalty shootout to award another point.
Despite Philadelphia saving Alex Monis’ shot to start the third round, a save by Gunn to close out the fourth round and Leandro Soria skying his shot to close out the fifth round led Revs II to a 4-3 shootout victory.
While Sunday saw Keegan Hughes make his Revs II debut, Thursday could provide more as defender Gabe Dahlin and forward Damorney Hutchinson may make their Revolution II and professional debuts.
Thursday could be a milestone for forward Marcos Dias. The forward is one appearance away from tallying his 70th for the club since arriving in New England in February 2022.
Revolution II enters Thursday’s match in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and will look to ascend with another good result.
FC Cincinnati 2:
Tyrone Marshall returns for his fourth year at the helm of FCC2 and returns after finishing the 2024 season atop the Eastern Conference table with 53 points on a 16-8-4 record with one shootout victory.
Despite their regular season success, their playoff run was brief as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Crown Legacy FC in the opening round of the playoffs.
Cincinnati 2’s 2025 season didn’t start well. They began the season with a meeting against Toronto FC II in Kentucky on March 9th. Toronto midfielder Nate Edwards’ lone strike in the 30th minute was the deciding factor as Cincinnati opened the season with a 1-0 loss at home.
Previous Meetings:
Thursday will mark the eighth all-time meeting between New England and Cincinnati. Revolution II has had a rough go historically against FCC 2, as they hold a 2-3-2 record.
2022 saw Revs II secure their only two victories over Cincinnati. Since then, Cincy has secured wins in three of the last five meetings while keeping Revs II off the scoreboard twice in that span.
While not an official match, Revs II did see success against this FCC 2 side during the preseason. Defender Keegan Hughes netted a brace as Revs II secured a 2-0 win over Cincinnati on February 10th.
