New England Revolution II:
It’s been a rocky couple of weeks for Richie Williams and Revolution II as they come into Friday’s match amidst a five-game winless run that’s seen them go 0-4-1 while being outscored 12 to 6.
Their last outing saw Columbus Crew 2 secure a dominant 3-1 victory. Patrick Leal’s 81st-minute laser prevented the shutout for Revs II and earned Leal a nomination for Goal of the Matchweek.
Revs II find themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points on a 3-7-2 record with two shootout victories.
Most of Revolution II’s recent woes have come down to absences due to international duty and injuries. Thankfully for Williams, he’ll see some names return. Alex Monis (Philippines), Jamie Kabuusu (Grenada), and Colby Quiñones (Puerto Rico) return after spending time with their respective national teams. Additionally, defender Tiago Suarez returns after missing the loss to Columbus as he served a one-game suspension for the 72nd-minute red card he received against Chattanooga FC on June 1st.
Forward Olger Escobar will be out as he and Guatemala square off against Argentina. Statuses for forwards Marcos Dias, Liam Butts, and defender Victor Souza are unknown entering Friday. Dias has been out for two games, with his last appearance coming in May 26th’s draw and shootout victory over NYCFC II. Butts and Souza have only missed the loss to Crew 2 last Thursday. Hopefully, injuries won’t be an issue for Revolution II on Friday and in the future.
In brighter news, standout defender Damario McIntosh looks to make his first appearance after inking a deal with Revolution II on Tuesday. McIntosh started the year with the Academy before signing an amateur agreement with Revs II on March 13th. McIntosh has appeared in 11 matches in 2024, where he clocked 853 minutes.
Revolution II will look to keep NYRB off the board as they look for their first clean sheet of the season and their first since September 1st, 2023’s 3-0 victory over Huntsville.
New York Red Bulls II:
It’s been a mostly positive season for Gary Lewis as his NYRB II side enters Friday’s match in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 20 points on a 5-5-3 record with two shootout victories.
Smith and NYRB come into the match after securing a 2-1 win over Toronto FC II to snap a four-game skid.
Luckily for Revs II, NYRB II’s treading of late has been severely rocky as they hold a 2-5-2 record in their past nine outings.
Despite their recent woes, NYRB II’s early success came from Roald Mitchell, who scored eight goals in just five matches. Unfortunately for New York, Mitchell has been sidelined with a knee injury that required surgery.
With Mitchell out, Red Bulls II’s success has come from Ibrahim Kasule, who’s tallied five goals and three assists in 11 matches.Â
Revolution II’s defense has to be observant Friday as NYRB II leads MLS NEXT Pro in big chances created with 47. At the same time, Red Bulls II also lead the league in missed big chances with 27. New York has also had a lot go their way as they sit second for penalties awarded with seven.
Previous Meeting:
Friday will mark the fifth all-time meeting between New England and New York with Red Bulls II holding the historical advantage with a 2-1-1 record against Revs II.
Their first-ever meeting came on April 21st, 2023 when Oladayo Thomas’ 76th-minute penalty kick goal led to NYRB II securing a 1-0 shutout win. Things did not go Revs II’s way on June 4th, 2023, when goals from Julian Hall, Oladayo Thomas, Ronald Donkor, and Ibrahim Kasule led to Red Bulls II wiping Jack Panayotou’s game-tying goal in the seventh minute to secure a 4-1 victory.
August 6th, 2023’s meeting saw things get a little better for Revolution II as O’Vonte Mullings' stoppage time goal wiped Jordan Adeabyo-Smith’s 62nd-minute goal off the board and led to a 1-1 draw. NYRB II secured the additional point in the shootout after they walked away with a 4-3 victory.
Their most recent meeting saw fortune turn Revolution II’s favor at the perfect time as both sides squared off in the Eastern Conference Semifinal on October 6th, 2023. Thanks to goals from Malcolm Fry and Victor Souza, Revolution II secured a 2-1 victory to keep their inaugural playoff run alive.
