New England Revolution II:
After a disappointing 2024, 2025 has gotten off to a good start for Richie Williams and Revs II. The club enters Friday’s match in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with five points on a 1-0-1 record and one shootout victory.
After opening their 2025 campaign on March 9 with a draw and shootout victory over Philadelphia Union II, March 13 saw Revs II pick up their first win of the season, and since June 14, 2024, after goals from Marcos Dias and newcomer Damorney Hutchinson led to a 2-0 victory for New England.
Revs II returns to action following a busy international window that saw forwards Liam Butts (Guyana), Olger Escobar (Guatemala), and Alex Monis (Philippines) represent their nation.
Escobar’s time with Guatemala got off to a good start when the 18-year-old scored a stunning goal in the 86th minute during a friendly against Honduras that secured a 2-1 win for Guatemala. Escobar also clocked 61 minutes in Leg One of their Gold Cup Prelim series against Guyana on March 21. He was an unused sub in Leg Two on March 25, which saw Guatemala punch their ticket to the Gold Cup following a 2-0 win.
Butts was an unused substitute for Guyana in their two matches against Guatemala. He will look to make his international debut in June when Guyana competes in the Gold Cup Tournament.
Monis clocked 24 minutes as a substitute when the Philippines faced the Maldives in friendly competition on March 25th.
Toronto FC II:
Gianni Cimini’s fourth season at the helm of TFC II has been a mixed bag through two games. After opening the season with a 1-0 win on the road over FC Cincinnati 2, March 13 saw TFC II travel to Bridgeview, Illinois, where they suffered a 1-0 loss to Chicago Fire II.
TFC II’s 1-1-0 record to start the year sees them enter Friday’s game in eighth place with an even zero goal differential.
Cimini has been hard at work making additions in the lead-up to the match as TFC II added 2025 MLS SuperDraft pick Joseph Melto Quiah. The midfielder joined TFC II after three seasons at Dayton.
Toronto FC II also added Jamaican youth international Jahmarie Nelson. The 15-year-old forward becomes the youngest signing for the club. The second team also boasts former Vermont Green FC defender Reid Fisher.
Previous Meetings:
Friday will mark the 14th all-time meeting between New England and Toronto, dating back to both teams’ time in USL League One. Surprisingly, neither side has a historic advantage as both teams hold a 4-4-5 record against the other.
The first meeting came on July 9, 2021, when Damian Rivera’s 46th-minute strike was the deciding factor as Revs II secured three points with a 1-0 victory. July 23 saw Revs II secure another 1-0 victory thanks to Ryan Spaulding’s 68th-minute goal.
After securing 1-0 wins in their first two meetings, Toronto FC II turned the tables in the final two meetings of 2021 as a 24th-minute goal from Kevin Politz on October 8 and a 62nd-minute strike from Paul Rothrock on October 29 led TFC II to secure back-to-back 1-0 victories.
The first meeting of 2022 saw Revs II secure another 1-0 victory thanks to a strike from Marcos Dias in the 47th minute. July 3, 2022, saw both sides find the back of the net as goals from Marcos Dias in the 50th minute and Steffen Yeates in the 84th led to a 1-1 draw. TFC II secured the extra point following a 5-3 shootout victory. Rothrock’s performance secured all three points for Toronto on July 31, 2022, when the forward found the net in the 68th and 73rd minute to propel TFC II to a 2-0 victory.
The first meeting of 2023 was an entertaining one. After Matthew Catavolo and Jesus Batiz found the net in the third and 39th minutes, respectively, an own goal from Markus Cimermancic re-energized Revs II. Two goals from Damian Rivera in the 84th and 85th minute led Revs II to secure all three points with a 3-2 victory.
Since then, neither side has found three points. The last four meetings between New England and Toronto have ended in a draw, with Revolution II picking up the shootout victory in all four.
