Report: Villareal Set to Acquire Tajon Buchanan on Loan
The former Revs midfielder looks set for a move to LaLiga following spells with Club Brugge and Inter Milan.
Former New England Revolution midfielder Tajon Buchanan is on the move as Fabrizio Romano reports LaLiga side Villareal is set to acquire the Canadian international on loan from Italian side Inter Milan. Fellow transfer insider Tom Bogert noted that the deal is not officially signed and sealed,
Following a collegiate career at Syracuse, the Brampton, Ontario native took the first step of his professional soccer journey on January 11th, 2019, when the Revolution selected Buchanan with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.
Buchanan appeared in 67 matches for the Revolution across all competitions and tallied 12 goals and 11 assists over 3,725 minutes. Buchanan’s time in New England resulted in silverware as he was a part of the 2021 squad that set the record for most points in an MLS regular season at 73 while securing the 2021 Supporters’ Shield title!
Following the 2021 season, Buchanan departed the club after being sold to Belgian Pro League side Club Brugge for a reported fee of $7 million plus a sell-on clause. The Canadian’s time in Belgium saw him appear in 67 matches for Brugge where he notched five goals and 12 assists over 5,169 minutes. Like in New England, Bucahan also secured silverware for Brugge as he secured Belgian Championships in the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons.
Buchanan took the next step in his professional journey on January 5th, 2024, as he joined Serie A giants Inter Milan. Since joining Inter, Buchanan has appeared in 17 matches where he tallied one goal over 314 minutes. Buchanan’s time in Italy has seen him assist Inter in securing the 2023-24 Serie A and 2023-24 Italian Super Cup titles.
According to Romano, Buchanan is set to move to Villareal on loan with the Spanish club covering the Canadian’s salary. While the length of the loan is unknown, Romano reports the loan will include a purchase option that could see Buchanan move to the Spanish club once the loan expires.
Villareal finds themselves in fifth place with 34 points on a 9-5-7 record and trails fourth-placed Athletic Club Bilbao by six points.
We sure miss him, but wish him all the best.
This could be a good move for Tajon as long as he can stay healthy. His time at Inter has been troubled by knocks.
