Altidore Buyout Done to "Open Up Resources For the Summer"
Omar Gonzalez on JozyAltidore: "I know he’s going to land on his feet and he’s on to do great things because the type of person he is will always do well in life and I’m definitely going to miss him.”
The New England Revolution completed a one-time buyout of Jozy Altidore’s contract to “open up resources for the summer,” according to head coach Bruce Arena.
On Thursday, the Revs announced that Altidore would no longer occupy a roster spot due to the buyout. The Athletic reported that Altidore was on a max-TAM deal and that the Revs are looking to add at least one player this summer.
Altidore, 33, joined the Revs in 2022 and scored two goals in 27 regular-season appearances before departing. He also had two tallies last year while on a half-season loan to Puebla in Mexico.
The Athletic stated that Greek sides AEK Athens and PAOK have expressed interest in adding Altidore. The Blazing Musket reported that two top-profile clubs from the Turkish Super Lig have also inquired about the striker.
Friend and former teammate Omar Gonzalez isn’t sure what comes next for Altidore, but he’s certainly rooting for his success.
“Yeah, absolute great person,” Gonzalez said of Altidore. “I’m going to miss him. The team’s going to miss him. He’s a big personality. Always brought a lot of laughs every single day and really good vibes. I think the locker room is going to miss him.
“As a player, he still has a lot to give. And so, as a friend, as a teammate, I wish Jozy the best. I know he’s going to land on his feet and he’s on to do great things because the type of person he is will always do well in life and so I’m definitely going to miss him.”
