The future of MLS NEXT Pro was reimagined on Thursday as Major League Soccer partnered with private equity firm KKR to form “Hometown Soccer Holdings”.
The partnership will focus on the business end of the developmental league as Hometown Soccer Holdings will “serve as MLS NEXT Pro’s commercial engine, supporting stadium development in new communities, creating new club brands for MLS-affiliated teams, and enhancing the fan experience through high-energy matchday environments at fan-friendly venues with distinct local identities.”
MLS Commissioner Don Garber says a partnership with KKR will strengthen MLS NEXT Pro as a league while helping further the development of U.S. and Canadian prospects.
“This investment will help build and grow MLS NEXT Pro and reflects our ambition to expand into new markets, develop soccer-specific infrastructure, elevate the matchday experience, and deepen connections between our clubs and their communities," he said
Hometown Soccer Holdings will see Tom Glick serve as CEO while Chris Klein serves as the organization’s president. Glick joins HSH following spells as the CCO of Manchester City and President of New York City FC. Klein, a 13-year MLS vet, joins HSH following 12 years as President with the LA Galaxy and co-chair of Los Angeles’ 2026 World Cup bid.
Glick reaffirmed KKR’s belief that “Every city deserves a professional club it can call its own, one that inspires local pride and contributes meaningful economic impact,” and adds, “We welcome the opportunity to work with local leaders to develop clubs and venues that reflect the character of their markets and bring professional soccer closer to more fans across the country.”
MLS NEXT Pro President Ali Curtis says Thursday’s announcement will help in the short-term and long-term goals of the league.
“This investment will contribute to our league’s broader trajectory; it strengthens our ability to provide more opportunities for players, expand into new markets, and to continue building a competitive professional environment that prepares the next generation of talent for success in MLS and beyond," Curtis said.
The Blazing Musket reached out to the New England Revolution on Thursday’s announcement and what it could entail for the club’s MLS NEXT Pro side, New England Revolution II. Additional announcements are expected from the partnership in the coming months.
