An potential all time classic, two teams with zero knockout wins combined going to PKs, and a darkhorse with another dominant performance.
Sounds like another day at the World Cup.
ARGENTINA 3, CAPE VERDE 2 (AET)
I do not know how many Round of 32 matches will ever be instant classics, but they will all be judged against Cape Verde's effort against the World Champions.
The Blue Sharks took the Albiceleste into extra time, equalized on a Puskas nominee level strike, before falling to an odd own goal on a corner kick.
Lionel Messi to the surprise of no one was first onto the scoresheet when he pulled down Lisandro Martinez pass inside the box to quite literal perfection before slotting home going top shelf on a sprawling Vozinha at the near post.
But then Argentina kind of settled into cruise control mode and didn't really put the game away. So Cape Verde obliged and got back into the match with a double nutmeg; Ryan Mendez going five hole on the assist to Deroy Duarte who in turn found just enough space between Lisandro's legs and over Emiliano Martinez's foot to make Argentina sit up and realize they were the video game meme at the moment.
However no goal would come in regulation, meaning Cape Verde through 90 minutes of standard play, had done the seemingly impossible:
In their first-ever World Cup, Cape Verde played against:

Argentina (FIFA #1)
Spain (FIFA #2)
Uruguay (FIFA #16)
Saudi Arabia (FIFA #61)
They didn’t lose to any of them within 90 minutes. The smallest nation to ever make the World Cup knockouts. Thank you Cape Verde 🇨🇻
That is a list that features SIX combined World Cup wins and no regulation losses for a team making their debut at the World Cup and has just four total regional appearances at AFCON with two quarterfinals in their history.
And somehow the story gets better.
Lisandro Martinez broke the deadlock a few minutes into the extra frame, collecting a corner kick that went through everyone at the back post and rocketing a shot into the top near corner.
And then our hero Sidny Lopes Cabral entered the chat.

Cape Verde would eventually give up a goal on a really bizarre own goal about ten minutes after this, Messi finding Cristian Romero's head on a corner but his downward effort redirected into goal via the hand of Diney Borges as he tried to challenge the aerial ball.
Sidny Lopes Cabral almost struck another worldie, this time from a set piece in the waning minutes, only to force a fingertip save from Emiliano Martinez as he pushed an exquisite free kick up and over his crossbar.
The legend of Cape Verde would not be complete with eight more saves from their ageless keeper Vozinha, whose most impressive save of the night was being alert to a free kick as he set up his wall but scrambled across to parry away Messi's curling shot.

the game... he hugged me and said: you are great, your people should be proud of you.
That was incredible for me", says Vozinha
"Hearing words like that from someone like Leo Messi means a lot to me. I thanked him and said: thank you Leo, you… pic.twitter.com/Bx0udpE3zO
So ends the chapter of one of the greatest underdog runs in World Cup history, a team that quite simply does not know how to lose on the world's biggest stage, and a population of 500,000 that has countless fans around the world.
Today we are still all Blue Sharks.
Egypt 1 (4), Australia 1 (2) - PKs
Emam Ashour's first half goal was cancelled out by his teammate Mohamed Hany's second own goal of the tournament as the Pharaohs and Socceroos played out a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time.
The interesting part of the game happened right before the shootout, with Australia opting to sub in veteran keeper Mathew Ryan in the 119th minute with shades of the Dutch using Tim Krul back in the day.
It was not a move that probably mattered as Harry Souttar skied the Aussie's first kick and Lucas Herrington pinged the crossbar on the fourth. However Ryan only ever came close to one kick, guessing correctly on Mahmoud Saber's opening kick but the Egypt substitute, who entered in the 121st minute and first action in the game was his penalty, set Egypt on their way.
Mo Salah's violently fast run up in particular seemed to unsettle Ryan in goal as the now ex-Liverpool man smashed his shot straight down the middle to help Egypt through to Round of 16 and secure their first ever knockout win.
COLOMBIA 1, GHANA 0
Do not let the scoreline fool you, this was a dominant performance from Los Cafeteros, as they made Jhon Arias' 14th minute goal stand up in a 1-0 win.
Prior to the goal, each team was forced to make an injury substitution in the early stages - Jhon Cordoba making way for Luis Suarez (not that one) in the 8th for Colombia and defender Marvin Senaya having to be replaced by Alidu Seidu for Ghana.
And it was Suarez who made an immediate impact, sending in a cross on the second attempt from the right wing after an initial block, and Arias streaking in on the backside to finish across goal into the near post side netting to give the Cafeteros the lead.
Ghana simply had no answer in this one, they took only eight shots, just two inside the penalty area and put none on target. Meanwhile Colombia never found their second but pushed into Ghanaian keeper Lawrence Zigi into making seven saves on the back of an 8-for-20 shooting performance that generated an impressive 2.0 xG.
UPCOMING MATCHES
Argentina and Egypt will meet in the Round of 16 on July 7 at 12 noon (US Eastern) from Atlanta while Colombia will play Switzerland right after at 4pm from BC Place in Vancouver.
