Vermont Green FC took on New England FC in lovely Lynnfield Massachusetts and secured a 4-0 win over the home side. With the win, Vermont has clinched a spot in the postseason.
Seth Wilson started in net behind the backline of Riley Moloney, Brandon Marshall, Nicholas McHenry, and Shakir Nixon. Connor Miller and Efe Afor made up the midfield duo while Ryan Zellefrow played as a No.10.
Diego Rosas and Alex Hall were on the wing while Jeremi Francou was the lone striker up top.
Both sides showed their talent, exchanging spells of possession early on. Fortunately for Vermont, it would break the deadlock in the 16th minute. After peppering the NEFC goalkeeper, Connor Miller calmly struck a powerful shot into the back of the net.
After a giveaway led to NEFC getting in on goal, Marshall made a crunching tackle to maintain Vermont's lead in the 18th minute. On the ensuing corner, the ball bounced around the box and Wilson tapped the shot over the bar and out for another corner kick that Vermont was able to defend without allowing a goal.
At the hydration break, Vermont was looking the better side but NEFC was not making life easy for the defending champions. Hall in particular was having a good game, moving with ease up and down the flank and breezing by his opponents.
The Green continued to pile on the pressure with Hall and Rosas looking to add to the scoreline, Miller had a chance after dribbling through the NEFC backline in the 37th minute but his shot trickled wide.
NEFC got a good chance in the 41st minute but the shot sailed over the goal and into the forest behind the stadium. NEFC kept up the pressure but crucial interventions from Marshall and quality goalkeeping from Wilson kept the score level.
It didn't take long for Vermont to double its lead coming out of half. Miller once again found the back of the net, this time from 18 yards out as a low-driven shot escaped NEFC's goalkeeper.
NEFC's No.55 kicked out at Miller in the 54th minute after he was dribbling in circles around New England. On the ensuing free kick McHenry tested the NEFC goalkeeper who tipped the attempt over goal.
The pressure was eventually too much as Moloney blasted a half volley from the top of the box that went bar down to give Vermont a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute. Alex Hall was in on goal soon after and was pushed down in the box but the referee deemed no foul had occured.
NEFC made four changes at the 61st minute. Soon after in the 62nd minute[, Rosas and Miller stepped off the pitch in favor of Samson Kpardeh and Joseph Picotto. McHenry picked up a yellow card in the the 66th minute for shoving an opponent in the lead up to a corner kick.
Kpardeh looked to add to his scoring tally but his shot was directed right at the opposing goalkeeper. Soon after in the 76th minute, Hall and Moloney were replaced by Gabe Fernandez and Nikos Clarke-Tosczak.
No.91 for NEFC tested Wilson but the shot went wide in the 79th minute. New England continued to pile on the pressure but struggled to get shots on target. Some great combination play from Clarke-Tosczak, Fernandez and Kpardeh nearly led to a goal but the shot was once again directed at the goalkeeper.
Francou nearly added to the scoreline in the 82nd minute but his shot sailed over goal. After the attempt, Vermont made two changes as Andrea Di Blasio and Omar Ramadan replaced Francouu and Zellefrow.
Kpardeh put a bow on the match with a 87th minute with a thundererous strike past the goalkeeper.
