Taylor Twellman is interested in seeing what the New England Revolution do with their open Designated Player slot.

The player-turned-commentator, who will take part in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course from July 10-12 (watch on NBC Sports and Peacock), praised his former club, which sits fourth in the Eastern Conference.

First-year head coach Marko Mitrovic has brought positive energy to the Revs, who missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

"Marko's been really good with the Revolution, and changing the culture and believing in the young players," Twellman said. "It looks like the Revolution players are enjoying their work and enjoying their vocation and getting after it.

"Marko's really had his finger on the pulse."

The Revs will now have an opportunity to make moves, as the summer transfer window is open from July 13 until September 2.

Tom Bogert of The Athletic reports that Matt Turner will return to New England on loan from French club Olympique Lyonnais for the remainder of the 2026 MLS season in a deal that includes an option to buy. Bogert noted that the netminder won't require a Designated Player slot.

With a 76.4% save percentage (second-best in Major League Soccer) and 5.1 goals prevented (third-best), Turner has been a big part of the Revolution's recent success.

"I think Matt Turner coming back is massive," Twellman said. "He can't be a DP, though. In the current climate of MLS, [with] the roster rules – even though they will change with the schedule change and all that coming up – I just don't think it's really the smartest idea to have a goalkeeper as a Designated Player."

The Revs' only genuine DP is Carles Gil, who was recently named to his fifth MLS All-Star Game. The 33-year-old has consistently ranked among the league's best playmakers since joining in 2019.

"He's arguably, if not the best player in Revolution history, he's 1-A, 1-B," Twellman said.

The prospect of adding another influential piece intrigues Twellman, who confirmed our report that the Revs expressed interest in winger Jack Harrison, saying, "I know the Revs were sniffing around that."

Harrison, who began his career with New York City FC, is a Leeds United player who was recently on loan to Serie A club Fiorentina.

"If it is a guy like a Jack Harrison that's been reported out there, well, that's interesting," Twellman said. "That tells you they believe they need production in wide areas and all of that after spending money at the 9 position."

Winger is one of two positions that Twellman believes the Revs could look to bolster.

"When I watch the Revs play, there's still something for me that says, if you have a top five [No.] 6 – and I've always been a believer that is the most important position on the field – does that change the Revs?" Twellman asked.

"I also believe a wide player makes them better. So, for me, to answer your question, it's a wide player or somebody in the middle of the park who can run the show. Not a Carles Gil, but run the show by running all over the field and controlling the tempo of the game."
