The New England Revolution's revamped front office is looking at ways to improve the team during the summer transfer window, which runs from July 13 through September 2.

The Revs announced a pair of promotions and contract extensions on Monday, naming Curt Onalfo as senior vice president of soccer operations and Chris Tierney as general manager and chief soccer officer.

Onalfo will supervise the club’s soccer operations and pro pathway, while Tierney will oversee the first team roster and technical staff.

Tierney noted that one of his immediate goals is "going into this summer transfer window and leaving the window with a better team than we entered."

"We've entered this transfer window with a plan and identified positions where we'd like to strengthen the team, Tierney said. "It's certainly our goal to add some impact players that we feel like will help us in the short term.

"But we’re going to be very considerate about the players that we bring into this club going forward. They have to be players that not only help us on field in the positions that we’ve identified, but they have to be the right culture fit as well.”

The goalkeeping position needs to be addressed, as Matt Turner's one-year loan from Lyon expired on June 30. The USMNT netminder leads the league in goals prevented (6) and has the second-highest save percentage (76.9%).

The Revs want to keep Turner – Tierney said, "I think if an executive from any of the other 29 teams was sitting up here talking to you, they’d say that they’d love to have Matt Turner on their team – but there are factors at play.

"We are in conversations with [Lyon] to try to find a deal that satisfies all parties," Tierney said. "You have Lyon, you have [New England], and you have Matt, and I think a deal has to make sense for all three of those parties in order for it to work. We are working diligently to make that happen. We would certainly love to have Matt here long-term."

The Revs are also contemplating how to use their open Designated Player slot, which was occupied by Turner, though he could've been bought down. Tierney plans to work with head coach Marko Mitrovic to find the right player.

“I think the way we think about our Designated Player spots going forward, of course in collaboration with Marko, is that we’re going to bring a player in that we feel is a perfect fit for us," Tierney said. "That includes the on-field product, it includes the players’ capabilities and what they can provide us, but again, it has to be the correct cultural fit for us. He has to fit into the expectations and the standards of our club.

"We’re evaluating a number of options to bring in a Designated Player this summer, and our hope and expectation is to be able to do that.”

The Revolution, who are fourth in the Eastern Conference, are preparing for the second half of the season, as the league paused for the World Cup. They will play some MLS friendlies before resuming competition on July 22.
