Victor Souza Excited To Continue Development With Revs II
The Blazing Musket got a chance to talk to the Revs II sophomore about 2023, the preseason, Richie WIlliams, and goals for 2024!
While at the Revolution Training Center on Wednesday, The Blazing Musket got to catch up with Revolution II defender Victor Souza to discuss the offseason, the squad, new head coach Richie Williams, and the upcoming MLS NEXT Pro season.
Souza, the 39th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, enters his second season with the New England Revolution’s developmental club. The former Boston College defender had a stellar debut season in 2023 that saw him tally one goal and one assist over 2,448 minutes, which ranked third most across MLS NEXT Pro.
“The past year was amazing, honestly. I feel like I developed a lot as a player,” Souza said. “I played a lot of games, a lot of minutes, so I definitely got a lot of experience too.”
Revolution II is under new leadership this season. With Clint Peay serving as an assistant under Caleb Porter, Richie Williams is the new head coach for the second team.
The defender has already learned a lot from his new head coach and is pleased with how the team is looking so far.
“He’s really been guiding us and installing his principles upon us, and I think the team looks really good.” Souza said. “Things are starting to look really good for us.
“He wants me to play longer passes. Overall, just being safer and tougher as a defender. I sometimes take a lot of risk on the ball because I’m comfortable on the ball, but he wants me to just prioritize defending the goal first, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Revolution II will look to build off the success of their historic 2023 campaign, as the goal for 2024 looks similar to 2023 where they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
“The goal is to always win as many games as possible. Make the playoffs, and hopefully make a run in the playoffs,” the defender stated. “Personally, I just want to be as consistent as possible and continue to improve my game.”
