A Look At Lexington SC
We spoke to cohost of Bluegrass Soccer Cast Jon Hunt to get a scouting report on Vermont Green's U.S. Open Cup opponent
With Vermont Green FC facing off against Lexington SC in the First Round of the 2024 U.S. Open Cup,
spoke to from Bluegrass Soccer Cast to learn more about the Green’s opponent.TBM: Lexington has gone through a lot of changes leading up to the new season. What went wrong last year that led to a new coach and an overhauled roster?
JH: Lexington dealt with not being able to live up to the roster potential, not really putting in a full 90 in a majority of matches in 2023 and having a bit of bad luck on their side by having some insane goals scored against them.
The coaching change was always going to happen, Sam Stockley was surviving as both sporting director and coach. He stepped back into his primary role as sporting director to ensure the team would have been more competitive the next season and to ensure a proper connection between the youth and senior teams.
Roster in USL1 typically have a lot of turnover, so it was expected to have a lot of guys go and only keeping a few.
TBM: What is Lexington's tactical identity? How do they like to play the game?
JH: This is still he figured out under coach Powell but they like to play an aggressive attacking style that keeps the ball moving and then striking at the right time.
Defensively, they play a bend but don’t break style that has led to not a single goal being conceded in 2024.
TBM: Who is a player to watch for Lexington?
JH: There’s many players to watch, but given the club has to play 3 matches in 9 games (2 on the road) I would expect to see a more rotated squad. In that case I would look out for Ates Diouf or Assad Liadi (if they play) as both men scored double digit goals last season.
TBM: Anything else we should know about the club?
JH: Lexington is slowly becoming one of the pillar clubs of USL as they field teams in every possible league and the club is set to move into a new stadium in August.
