USWNT Star Sam Mewis to Coach Vermont Green FC Women's Exhibition Match
"I can’t believe that an opportunity like this presented itself so quickly—to help grow women’s soccer with an environmentally conscious and social justice centered club."
Vermont Green FC continues to make waves across the American soccer landscape and the club’s latest announcement is a major one. The club announced on Friday that United States Women’s National Team star Sam Mewis will coach the Green’s women’s side in the club’s inaugural women’s exhibition match.
“I am so excited and honored to be a part of Vermont Green this summer. When I moved to Vermont, I really wanted to connect with the people here, enjoy the outdoors, and make an impact somehow. I can’t believe that an opportunity like this presented itself so quickly—to help grow women’s soccer with an environmentally conscious and social justice centered club. I can’t wait to coach this team and meet the wonderful fans who make this club so special!” said Mewis.
Mewis has nearly a decade of professional experience at the club level and made 83 appearances with the USWNT. The Massachusetts native won the World Cup in 2019 and won three NWSL championships, an FA Cup with Manchester City, and was recognized as the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2020.
The soccer star has already been working with the club as it looks to expand into the women’s game. Coach Brad Agoos will serve on Mewis’ staff for the match and men’s head coach and sporting director Adam Pfeifer will work with Mewis to build out the Green Mountain Gals roster.
Hidden in the club’s press release is a commitment to hosting women’s exhibition matches until a full-time women’s club can be established in a national league. Mewis will also remain an advisor to the club after the inaugural match on June 22.
“This could not be a more exciting time for Vermont soccer,” said Pfeifer “Sam Mewis has competed and won at the absolute highest levels of the game. We are privileged to be able to work with her for this match and are grateful that she believes in the project. June 22nd is going to be an incredible celebration and a significant step forward for the club’s long term goals.”
