United Soccer League Announces Plans for Division League One
USL cites the country's ever-growing interest in the sport as the spark for their ambitious expansion.
Thursday saw the United Soccer League take a massive step when it announced its plan to launch a Division One league slated to begin in 2027-28. The plan was first reported on by Paul Tenorio.
In a statement, USL says the planned league will look to “bring the highest level of soccer to more communities across the country.” It will also look to “build on the USL’s commitment to grow the game at all levels, provide new opportunities for players, teams, and fans, and strengthen the foundation of American soccer at a time when the sport is experiencing unprecedented momentum.”
USL CEO Alec Papadakis called Thursday’s announcement a “defining moment for the USL and the future of soccer in the United States.”
“Creating a Division One league is a bold step forward, expanding access to top-tier competition, deepening the connection between our communities and taking another step in aligning with the structure of the global game,” he later added. “By uniting people through soccer and bringing Division One to more cities, we’re not just growing the sport—we’re creating lasting opportunities while building a more sustainable and vibrant soccer ecosystem in the U.S.”.
Thanks to the arrival of several international stars, the 2025 Club World Cup, 2026 World Cup, and 2028 Summer Olympic Games, interest in the sport appears to be on a meteoric rise throughout the United States, and it’s something USL is looking to capitalize on.
“As North America prepares to host these global tournaments, the sport is at a pivotal moment, creating unparalleled opportunities to invest in its long-term future,” the league said in its announcement.
UPDATE: The following statement was provided to The Blazing Musket from Hartford Athletic
The announcement of a new Tier 1 men’s professional league marks another significant step forward for soccer in this country and is a testament to the USL’s ambitious vision. As a proud member of the USL Championship, we are excited about the league’s trajectory and the momentum behind soccer in the U.S. We have always believed in the strength of this league, the passion of our fans, and the potential for even greater heights.
As details emerge, we will explore all opportunities in collaboration with our incredible supporters, community partners, and state officials to ensure the best future for soccer in Connecticut. Right now, our focus remains on delivering an unforgettable 2025 season, competing for a championship, creating the best matchday experience in American soccer, and making Hartford the best place to live, work and play.
This would be a huge deal, wonder how they’ll get there from the professional standards perspective
This is really interesting and likely a good thing. I wonder how many current owners of USL teams have primary owners with the $40 million net worth required by US soccer for D1 teams?
We will know if US Soccer is truly committed to an open and fair system if they leave the D1 requirements at their current levels. If they suddenly start raising the requirements to owners with a $100 million net worth that will speak volumes about the the backroom agreements between MLS and US Soccer.
