Tomas Chancalay Has "Unbelievable" Night Against Austin FC
The Argentine attacker had two goals against Austin FC.
New England Revolution fans hope that Saturday’s performance against Austin FC is a sign of what Tomas Chancalay can offer.
In his third appearance (second start) for the Revs, the 24-year-old Argentine attacker had two goals. The first was a right-footed finish at the back post and the second was a header that came after a corner kick.
It was the first time a Revs player had a multi-goal game in his first three appearances since Carles Gil completed the feat in 2019.
“[Chancalay] did great, he’s playing really well,” Revs assistant coach Richie Williams remarked. “He scored two big goals for us and he’s adjusting well. He’s fitting in.”
Andrew Farrell agreed with Williams’ assessment, saying, “Tonight [Chancalay] was unbelievable, scoring the two goals.”
Signed on loan from Racing Club on Jul. 10, Chancalay got his first taste of Revs soccer when he played for the second team on Aug. 13. Unfortunately, he had to depart after 20 minutes due to a thigh contusion.
Chancalay has looked good recently though, contributing on both sides of the ball for the first team.
“From the first day, we saw the level of play that he has,” Farrell said. “He’s not necessarily a speedy winger that gets in behind but he’s very comfortable with his feet and coming inside, similar to Gustavo [Bou]. And he can shoot the heck out of the ball.”
The Revs brought in Chancalay after Dylan Borrero suffered a season-ending ACL injury. The team has the option to purchase Chancalay at the end of the season.
With eight games left to go, plus playoffs, the Revs want to see Chancalay continue to produce in the final third.
“I think [adding Chancalay] was an important move for us,” Farrell said. “He gives us something different than all the other wingers, players that we have in the midfield. [He’s a] big signing and obviously happy for him to get on the scoresheet and I expect him to keep on going like that.”
He looked fantastic last night. Based on that performance we should buy him and get hyped about him and borrero on the field together next year.
He had a great game nice to see him get both goals. Hope to see him finding the back of the net more as the season winds down.
