The Red-Headed Ramos: Reid Fisher Brings Bite to Vermont Back Line
The dominant defender has been a great addition to The Green's back line
It is quite hard not to notice Reid Fisher, his red hair acts as an easy indicator for where he is on the pitch. But once you get past his beautiful locks, the center back’s play will capture your attention.
Fisher is coming off an impressive redshirt freshman season at San Diego State. After starting all of the Aztecs’ matches and leading the team in minutes, the center back was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
The California native didn’t know a whole lot about joining about USL 2 until San Diego State assistant coach Adrian Dubois recommended that Fisher join Vermont Green FC.
“I didn't really know anything about USL 2 or anything about that and my assistant coach Adrian Dubois kind of told me all about the owners at The Green, the coaches and how great the overall organization is,” Fisher said when speaking to The Blazing Musket about joining the USL League Two club. “That it will help me grow as a player, get exposure, kind of all those good things that you look for as a young player looking to make his mark. So after hearing about the mission statement, how great the owners are, the staff, the players coming in, it was kind of a no-brainer for me.”
Making a move across the country is challenging for anyone nevermind someone still in college. Fisher said goodbye to friends and family all in the name of improving as a player.
But the center back has already made friends (or possibly gained another family) by joining The Green. Fisher credited head coach Adam Pfeifer as well as his teammates for making the transition to the East Coach a lot easier.
When on the field, the California kid is known for his physical play. Fisher can deliver crunching tackles along with the aerial ability to win duels in the air.
But the physical aspect is just one area where the center back hopes to dominate opponents. Fisher can be found throughout the match talking to opponents as he looks to win the mental war. It won’t surprise fans to learn that he is a big fan of Sergio Ramos.
“I think for me, growing up it was always Sergio Ramos,” Fisher said. “I loved his intensity and obviously, dominating corners and dominate your opponent like mentally and physically. So for me, obviously looking at him and obviously kind of the modern game it's a little more passing and a little more clean as a center back so honestly, in terms of that, I'm kind of looking like Virgil Van Djik and kind of guy guys like that.”
With Vermont having some scoring issues to start the season, Fisher will play an important role for The Green. Whether it be in the summer or back home in California, the center back is a player to keep an eye on. He could become a promising player whether it be in MLS or the higher USL divisions.
Great piece!
