The Blazing Musket Roundtable: Who Will be the Revs MVP in 2023?
The staff of The Blazing Musket make some predictions
The New England Revolution will play their first regular season game of 2023 on Saturday when they travel to face Charlotte FC. The Blazing Musket will be discussing a variety of topics throughout the week as a way to preview the year.
Today, we ask who will be the Revs Most Valuable Player for 2023.
Seth: Giacomo Vrioni
The obvious choices for Revs MVP are Carles Gil and Djordje Petrovic but I’m going to go a little outside of the box and choose Vrioni.
Signed in Jul. 2022, Vrioni ended his first MLS season with one goal in seven appearances. The Designated Player has looked determined to make his second year a better one as he’s been putting in extra work and saying the right things.
In the Revs’ preseason finale, Vrioni scored a nice goal and helped force an Orlando own goal. The team certainly hopes that this is a sign of things to come.
In my opinion, the Revolution will be good if Vrioni is good. This is why he’s my candidate for team MVP.
Tanner: Djordje Petrovic
Petrovic is the most talented player on the New England Revolution. Last season despite only playing in 21 matches he came in second in the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.
The 23-year-old showed in the final preseason match that his form is on point and one can only expect his play to continue to elevate in his first full season in New England.
A lot of chatter has been made regarding a potential transfer to Europe but given the situation of the Revolution, I bet they would prefer a Matt Turner type move that completes after the season is finished.
With Petrovic go the Revolution in 2023.
Sam: Carles Gil
I’m going to go with the Occam's razor approach here and pick the simplest and most likely solution (if I am using this wrong please forgive me I want to sound intelligent).
Carles Gil is the heartbeat of this team. If he is successful, New England is most likely winning games. He can’t do it all but he sure does a lot.
Sometimes I think we can hold Gil to high standards and really forget just how talented and special he is. Once you win an MVP, the spotlight is always on you, and with that comes increased expectations.
But I believe Gil could return to that MVP form this season. If Vrioni gets off to a good start, I imagine Gil is partly responsible for that. Expect him to rack up plenty of assists and possibly even lead the league in the category.
With just how important he is to New England’s success, I think he is the clear favorite for team MVP.
Josh: Carles Gil
Do I have to elaborate? Ever since arriving in New England in January 2019, Carles Gil has undoubtedly been the Revs most productive player.
The Spanish midfielder has notched an impressive 21 goals and 48 assists over 101 appearances. With Gustavo Bou, Giacomo Vrioni, and Dylan Borrero, expect the midfield maestro to score and assist on numerous goals in 2023.
Djordje Petrovic will carry over his excellent play from last year.
I’m going to say Carles Gil.
