Scenes from Tuesday's Revs Practice - Aug. 22 2023
Here are three storylines from Thursday's practice.
The Blazing Musket attended the New England Revolution’s training session on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023. Here are some notes from the trip.
An Update On Injuries
On the positive front, Carles Gil and Bobby Wood were active participants during the training session.
Andrew Farrell and DeJuan Jones were seen training off to the side, but assistant coach Richie Williams didn’t express any concern when talking to the media.
“They’re good,” Williams said. “Right now, for them, they’ve put in a lot of minutes all season. They’re two guys we really rely on who don’t really break down too often, so we just give them a rest here and there. That was the best case for them today, to do a little warm up and do some stuff on the side.”
Williams was asked about Gustavo Bou, who didn’t play in the Leagues Cup Round of 16 game against Querétaro. The Argentine attacker has made progress recently.
“He’s moving along,” Williams said. “He’s just dealing with a minor muscle injury. We feel like little by little he’s getting better and hopefully he’ll be on the field soon rather than later.”
Chancalay Integrating With The Revs
Revs fans got their first glimpse at Tomas Chancalay when he played for Revolution II against Atlanta United 2.
The 24-year-old looked lively, even pulling off a dummy to set up the opening goal. Chancalay did suffer a thigh injury on the play, causing him to exit soon after.
He’s now healthy and training with the first team.
“Unfortunately, when he played the Revs II game, he only played about 10 minutes before he got injured, so that was unfortunate because we wanted to see him in a game situation, but also we wanted to help him with his fitness, because he hadn’t played in some months,” Williams said. “He looks good. He looked good in training and is back on the field and looked fit and healthy. We’re going to monitor him all week so hopefully he continues to progress and we’re going to see if he’s ready to go for the weekend.”
It’s still early days for Chancalay, so it’s unknown how much he will contribute. His new teammates have seen some positive moments, though.
“Really, really clean on the ball, good technique, has a deadly finish sometimes,” Dave Romney remarked. “I’m excited for him get his fitness, find his feet, and really contribute for us.”
Romney Liked The Leagues Cup
The inaugural edition of the Leagues Cup recently concluded with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF lifting the trophy.
While the Revs would’ve liked to have advanced further in the summer-time tournament, Romney enjoyed the experience overall.
“It was a really fun tournament to play in,” Romney said. “I hope we do it again. I think a lot of the players enjoyed it as well.”
Romney appreciated playing against teams from another league, though he does wonder what the tournament would be like if some games were played in Mexico.
“It was really fun getting to play against the Mexican teams,” Romney said. “Hopefully we can again next year. Maybe it’ll be a little more fair for them if we go down to Mexico and play some games, but we’ll take the homefield advantage if we get it.”
