Rumor: Leagues Cup Format Changed for 2025
Some changes to are coming to 2025's edition of Leagues Cup
Despite concerns over schedule congestion with this coming summer's Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup action, Leagues Cup will return in 2025 with some slight modifications, according to ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano.
While the past two editions of the controversial tournament have featured a staggering 47 teams from MLS and Liga MX, that number will reportedly slim down this coming summer as Becherano reports 2025’s edition of Leagues Cup will feature just 18 teams from MLS going head-to-head against the 18 teams from Liga MX.
The format for 2025’s edition of Leagues Cup and which MLS teams will represent the league next summer remains undetermined.
Since making their Leagues Cup debut during the 2023 edition, the New England Revolution hasn’t had much success in the tournament.
2023 saw the Revs finish second in their group which secured them a spot in the knockout stage. Things got off to a good start when they secured a 2-2 draw and an ensuing 8-7 shootout victory over Atlas to advance. Their run ended in the Round of 16 when they suffered a 4-3 shootout defeat to Querétaro following a 1-1 draw.
