Sunday was a thrilling day for New England Revolution II as goals from Myles Morgan, Javaun Mussenden, and Damario McIntosh propelled Revolution II to a crucial 3-1 win on Decision Day, securing the fifth seed and the club’s second consecutive playoff berth.
In the days following the match, The Blazing Musket caught up with Head Coach Pablo Moreira to discuss what the win meant and how it impacts things heading into the playoffs.
There’s no sugarcoating it. Revolution II entered Decision Day in incredibly rough form, amidst a six-game losing streak that included four losses. Despite that, the club didn’t let their past haunt them, putting up a solid 90-minute effort to secure the win and their spot in the playoffs.
Moreira called the result “very important” as it helped in seeding and gave the club an added boost of momentum heading into the club’s third-ever playoff berth. While in fifth place and starting the run to the MLS NEXT Pro Cup on the road, Moreira isn’t too worried about it.
“What I do love about this team is that if you look at our home and away form, it’s very similar, and we’ve been one of the best road teams in this league," he said. "I thought it’s something that we expected, but at the end of the day, it’s a pressure-filled environment, a pressure-filled game. I think the resolve of the team just shows where we’re at as a team.”
While confident in his side, Moreira is aware that the four-week break between Decision Day and the beginning of the playoffs could halt momentum. Moreira and Revolution II will begin their hunt for the MLS NEXT Pro Cup on October 17 when they travel to ScottsMiracle-Gro Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, to face Columbus Crew 2 in the opening round of the playoffs.
