Revs Staying Even-Keel After "Most Complete Performance" Of The Season
Porter: "It reminds me of back when we won four games in a row and five of six."
The New England Revolution are staying grounded after Saturday’s 5-0 road win over CF Montreal.
The Revs continued the trend of scoring first—they’ve done this in 11 of 14 games since June 1—when Bobby Wood found the back of the net in the 7th minute. The veteran striker collected a second 30 minutes later.
Substitutes Nick Lima, Giacomo Vrioni, and Luca Langoni rounded out the scoring in the 71st, 79th, and 83rd minutes.
It was the Revolution’s first multi-goal win of the season and their third shutout.
“A great win and great performance, very comprehensive on both sides of the ball,” head coach Caleb Porter said. “Going into the game, we talked about having 11 games to go and every game is going to be like a cup final for us. It is great to get the three points on the road in the first one. We’ve got 10 more to go.”
Saturday was a positive result for the Revs, who are now 12th in the Eastern Conference after several other results went their way. The team is two points below the playoff line with ten games left.
The road ahead isn’t easy, so the Revs are staying even-keeled.
“It was definitely our most complete performance,” Porter said. “But we have to keep our highs low, I always believe that – keep your highs low and your lows high, and this is one we have to stay grounded. The guys definitely will gain some confidence from this, but we’ve got 10 more games to go, so we've got a lot of work to do.”
The Revolution were aided on Saturday by several returning players. Dylan Borrero and Vrioni played their first minutes since July 3 and July 13, respectively, while Carles Gil made his first start since June 22.
Each of these players are important to how the Revolution function.
“[The performance] reminds me of back when we won four games in a row and five of six,” Porter said. “We are picking up right where we left off, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it is first game since Cincinnati that Carles is back in. It is a whole different feel when he plays for us.”
The Revs also got Luca Langoni on the field for the first time. The club-record signing celebrated the occasion with a goal and assist.
The hope is that “The Lobster” will continue to show up on the scoresheet in the weeks to come.
“I would say it was a very good debut,” Gil said. “He's a very fast player and that moment we were winning 3-0, I think. With that space, he's a very good player. He's good for us and to have a new player start like this, he gives confidence for what is coming.”
Every game will matter going forward since the Eastern Conference is so tight. To make the playoffs, the Revs will need more performances like the one we saw on Saturday.
“Like I said two days ago, it showed that when we are almost all together, we can be one of the best teams in this league,” Gil said. “But it's just a game, three points, and we are still out of the playoffs, so we just want to continue like this and win 10 more games.”
“We want to continue like this and win 10 more games.”
Yes please, I’d like that
A good game hope it can continue.
