Revs Roll Past Montréal 3-0 as Miller Scores First Pro Goal, Vrioni Sees Red
Feingold shines with two goals and an assist against 10-men Montréal
The New England Revolution grabbed three crucial points on the road Saturday evening with a 3-0 win over CF Montréal.
For the Revs, Caleb Porter made two changes to the starting XI that secured a midweek draw against D.C United. Peyton Miller returned to the squad at left wing-back, and Keegan Hughes got the nod at center back for his first career MLS start (Ivacic; Miller, Fofana, Hughes, Beason, Feingold, Polster, Yusuf, Gil, Ganago, Chancalay).
Former Revolution striker Giacamo Vrioni headlined Montréal’s starting lineup. The home side entered the day at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with just one win through 16 games (Sirois; Bugaj, Campbell, Neal, Petrasso, Saliba, Piette, Sealy, Loturi, Clark, Vrioni).
Despite a poor start to the season, Montréal had a strong first half, maintaining the majority of possession and firing off eight shots compared to New England’s two.
However, with no goals to report, Vrioni made all the headlines in the first 45. He took a knock just minutes into the match, which left his foot pouring blood, and then received a red card in the 36th minute.
The Albanian kicked out at Hughes after the two collided near the sideline, catching him near the groin. After a short VAR check, the card was confirmed, and Vrioni was sent off in his first meeting with his former club.
It didn’t take the Revolution long to break the deadlock after halftime. Peyton Miller bagged his first professional goal in the 48th minute on a wingback to wingback connection.
Ilay Feingold whipped a dangerous curling ball into the box, finding Miller, who snuck past his defender and directed a volley with his laces into the bottom right corner.
Seven minutes after the opener, Feingold went from set-up man to goalscorer to double the Revs' advantage. Instead of sending a ball into the box, he cut inside on his left foot, beating his defender, and struck a low effort that may have taken a deflection before finding the back of the net.
Feingold’s second of the night rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute. He connected once again with Miller on a near cut-and-copy of the opening goal. This time, Feingold hit the volley using the side of his foot after Miller floated a ball into the box from the left side.
With the win, the Revolution extend thier unbeaten streak to nine games in MLS play and snap a run of four consecutive draws.
Next up for New England is a home date with FC Cincinnati to kick off a stretch of three straight matches at Gillette Stadium. That game will start at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday.
