Revs Issue Statement After MA Legislature Passes Economic Bill With Stadium Language
“We appreciate the decision from the Legislature to clear a path forward for the possibility of future development and economic improvement opportunities in the city of Everett.”
The New England Revolution moved closer to building a soccer-specific stadium in Everett when the Massachusetts legislature passed an economic development bill on Thursday.
Bill H.5100 includes language that would allow the construction of a soccer stadium and waterfront park at 173 Alford Street. This land is currently a designated port area, which limits its use.
The bill now heads to the desk of Governor Maura Healey, who has spoken positively about the Revs potentially moving to Everett.
“I know I like the soccer stadium,” Healey said during an interview with NBC Boston in August.
There are still many steps ahead before the stadium becomes a reality, but this bill opens the door.
A spokesman for the Revolution offered the following statement:
“We are grateful for Senate President Spilka’s leadership and for the cooperation and willingness of House leadership to advance this legislation. We appreciate the decision from the Legislature to clear a path forward for the possibility of future development and economic improvement opportunities in the city of Everett. For almost three decades, the Kraft Group has been interested in developing a soccer stadium for the New England Revolution and we are pleased that this legislation will allow work to start now to determine the financial feasibility and viability of this proposed site. We look forward to future discussions with stakeholders and officials at the local, state, and federal levels as the public process begins to evaluate this complicated site, which could be a driver for environmental rehabilitation and provide a park and new waterfront access to the area.”
Building anywhere close to a body of water these days is asking for trouble.
