Revs II Recap: Revolution II 2 (6) - Toronto FC II 2 (5)
Revs II go winless in 11 matches following their second-consecutive draw and shootout victory.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II looked to close their final homestand of the 2024 season on a high note when Toronto FC II was welcomed to Gillette Stadium Sunday night.
Williams made four changes from Saturday’s outing against Chicago. Max Weinstein started in goal behind the back line of Malcolm Fry, Tiago Suarez, Eric Klein, and Damario McIntosh. 16-year-old Cristiano Oliveira started in the midfield, paring with Javaun Mussenden and Maciel behind the attacking trio of Gevork Diarbian, Marcos Dias, and Joshua Bolma.
Things got off to a horrid start for Revs II in the eighth minute. After battling for the loose ball, Julian Altobeli broke free from Fry and drove into the box. Fry desperately attempted to poke the ball away from Altobeli but took him out instead as the head referee pointed to the spot.
Altobeli was the one to step to the spot for Toronto as he buried a right-footed shot to the bottom-right corner and in to give Toronto an early 1-0 lead.
Fortune changed for Revs II in the 41st minute thanks to a well-placed lob from Fry. After driving forward, the first teamer lobbed a perfect ball into the box to a waiting Diarbian, who headed the ball toward goal that dinked off the left goal post and dribbled along the goal line. Luckily for Revs II, Marcos Dias was there to tap it in to net his eighth goal of 2024 and level the game minutes before halftime.
Williams made one change before the second half started as Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi replaced Fry.
Things only got better for Revs II in the 49th minute. After getting the ball in the final third, Maciel lobbed a ball forward to Dias, who leaped and headed the ball into the net to notch his second goal of the night and his ninth of the season as Revs II went ahead 2-1.
A trio of changes came in the 61st minute as Victor Souza, Grant Emerhi, and Luka Borovic came on to replace McIntosh, Oliveira, and Maciel. Sunday marked Souza’s first appearance since June 1st’s 1-0 loss to Chattanooga.
Another change came New England’s way in the 74th minute as Liam Butts replaced Diarbian.
Just as things were heading in Revolution II’s favor, things changed in the 78th minute when Charlie Staniland received Charlie Sharp's pass atop the right corner of the box and drilled a shot into the bottom-left corner to level the match at two apiece.
For the 11th straight match, Revolution II fell short of securing all three points as they suffered its second straight draw.
Adisa De Rosario attempted to send a right-footed shot to the bottom-right corner. Max Weinstein made the dive to push the ball away and keep De Rosario out of the net and earn Revolution II the additional point in the seventh round of penalties.
It wasn’t the three points Revolution II looked destined for, but it was a positive result nonetheless.
Williams and Revolution II will look for their first three points since June 14, and their first on the road in 2024, when they travel to Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida to take on Orlando City B on Sunday, September 25 at 5:00 pm ET.
