Revolution Trade Giacomo Vrioni to Montreal
The Designated Player's time in New England concludes after two-and-a-half seasons.
Giacomo Vrioni’s time in New England ended on Tuesday when the Revolution traded the forward to fellow MLS side CF Montreal in exchange for $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money.
Seth Macomber was the first to break news of Vrioni’s deal to Montreal. The move comes after weeks of speculation on the Designated Player’s future in New England.
Since arriving in July of 2022, Vrioni has made 78 appearances across all competitions for the Revs and has notched 22 goals and five assists over 4.599 minutes.
Vrioni's departure gives Revolution an open Designated Player spot and a ton of flexibility as they continue building their roster ahead of 2025.
Thanks to newly implemented roster-building mechanics, the Revolution could either search for a new Designated Player to pair alongside Tomás Chancaly and Carles Gil, or they could sacrifice the open DP slot for an additional Under-22 slot plus up to an additional $2 million in General Allocation Money.
It’s been a busy offseason for the Revolution, who are looking for an improved 2025 following an underwhelming 2024 season. Since the 2024 season has ended, the Revs have made a blockbuster deal to acquire Leo Campana from Inter Miami while adding Tanner Beason, Alex Bono, Brayan Ceballos, Luis DÃaz, and Donovan Parisian to the roster.
The Revolution will reportedly begin preseason preparations as they reconvene at the Revolution Training Center this weekend.
50k is a pretty funny number. Ema was worth 200k to an expansion team. I'm almost surprised the revs aren't paying Montreal in order to free up the DP slot.
They probably have to cover the exchange rate difference $1 cad = $0.70 usd :). This seems like a buyout without it being a buyout. I had to check the calendar when I 1st saw the news to make sure it wasn't April 1st. I wish him well, but am not sorry to see him leave.
