Revolution Sign SV Werder Bremen Defender Ethan Kohler
Kohler joins New England after spells in the United States and Germany.
The New England Revolution bolstered its defense on Wednesday as the club announced the acquisition of defender Ethan Kohler from Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen.
Following stints with the San Jose Earthquakes Academy and USL Championship side Oakland Roots, Kohler headed across the Atlantic to join the Bremen organization, where he featured with the club’s U19 and reserve side.
After tallying two goals and an assist in 34 appearances with SV Werder Bremen II, Kohler spent the second half of 2025 on loan with 3. Liga side SC Verl, where he notched one goal in nine appearances for the club.
The Campbell, California, native arrives with some silverware under his belt. Kohler helped Bremen II secure the 2023-24 Bremen-Liga title.
Kohler reunites with Marko Mitrović after spending the summer playing under Mitrović at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Kohler started all four of the United States’ matches at the tournament, helping the nation secure shutouts against France and Italy.
In a press release, Mitrović called the defender “an elite professional and highly competitive player, who loves to win”, and added, “His work ethic and standards are very high, important qualities for our team and environment in creating a winning culture.”
Technical director Curt Onalfo highlighted Kohler’s talent and versatility as a defender.
“Ethan has emerged as one of the standout young talents in the U.S. youth national team program,” he said. “Ethan is a versatile defender who can play both outside back and center back, providing us with important depth for the season ahead.”
Kohler and the Revolution begin preseason preparations on January 10 as they ramp up for a multi-week training camp in Florida later in the month.
