Revolution International Roundup
See how the six members representing the New England Revolution organization have performed on the international stage!
It’s been a busy international window for the New England Revolution as six players from the Revolution and Revolution II represented their respective nations. Here’s how things have gone!
We start with Alhassan Yusuf, who joined Nigeria for two African Cup of Nations Qualifying matches. September 7 saw Nigeria open the window against Benin. Yusuf was an unused substitute as Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory thanks to a brace from Ademola Lookman and another goal from Victor Osimhen.
Yusuf and Nigeria will wrap up the window on Tuesday, September 10 when they face Rwanda at 9:00 am ET.
Revolution Homegrown Esmir Bajraktarević received his first call-up for Bosnia & Herzegovina ahead of a pair of UEFA Nations League matches. Their campaign began on September 7 when they squared off against the Netherlands, where Bajraktarević served as a substitute.
Bajraktarević saw his number called in the 68th minute as he replaced Denis Huseinbasic. The Appleton, Wisconsin native made an immediate impact in the 73rd minute as he lobbed a ball forward into the path of his childhood idol Edin Dzeko, who got onto the ball and slotted it past Bart Verbruggen.
Despite Esmir’s impact, it wasn’t enough, as Bosnia suffered a 5-2 defeat. They’ll look to get into the win column on Tuesday, September 10, when they face Hungary at 2:45 pm ET.
Xavier Arreaga looked to add to his international resume when he joined Ecuador for a pair of CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers. Arreaga found himself as an unused substitute when Ecuador squared off against Brazil on September 7, where Rodrygo’s lone goal propelled Brazil to a 1-0 win.
Arreaga and Ecuador will return to action on Tuesday, September 10th, when they face Peru at 5:00 pm ET.
Colby Quiñones returned to the international stage as he joined Puerto Rico for a pair of Concacaf Nations League matches. Quiñones found himself starting at right back as Puerto Rico kicked off their campaign on September 6 against Haiti.
Quiñones nearly notched an assist in the 28th minute when he lobbed a cross into the box from the right flank. His cross fell into a pocket of space for Ricardo Rivera, who rocketed a scissor kick on frame that Johny Placide somehow made the save. Luckily for Puerto Rico, Gerald Diaz was there to head Rivera’s deflected shot into the net to give Puerto Rico a 1-0 lead.
Things took a drastic turn in the second half when Haiti found the net four times to secure a 4-1 victory.
Alex Monis returned to the international stage as he joined the Philippines for the Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia.
Monis and the Philippines opened the tournament with a semifinal meeting with host nation Malaysia on September 4. Despite gaining the lead in the 27th minute thanks to an own goal from Malaysia, the host nation fought back to secure a 2-1 victory over the Philippines.
September 8 saw the Philippines square off against Tajikistan in the third-place meeting, where Alex Monis started again. Neither side found the advantage in regulation as things ended in a scoreless draw and went to penalties. Monis stepped to the spot in the shootout and found the back of the net, but the Philippines fell short as Tajikistan secured third place with a 4-3 shootout victory.
Olger Escobar joined the Guatemala senior team for a pair of Concacaf Nations League matches.
Guatemala began the window on September 5 when they hosted Martinique. Escobar unfortunately did not suit for the match due to a muscle injury, per Emisoras Unidas.
