New England Revolution II
Matchday 3 saw Richie Williams secure his first win at the helm of New England Revolution II.
It didn’t take long for the Revolution II offense to get rolling as a corner kick in the second minute saw Jack Panayotou curl a left-footed cross to the center of the box, where it found fellow first-teamer Malcolm Fry, who headed the ball into the net to put Revs II up 1-0 early.
David Polanco found the equalizer for Carolina Core in the 37th minute after rebounding a deflected shot from Jacob Evans and ripping a shot into the back of the net from outside the box.
The 59th minute saw Panayotou and Fry link up again to find the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. Things started with a costly turnover by Carolina fell to Marcos Dias. Dias lobbed a ball forward to Fry who darted up the left flank. Fry got onto the ball and turned his attention towards Carolina’s goal. Despite Carolina blocking the initial shot, Fry played the ball back to Panayotou, who buried the ball into the net.
Revolution II enters Sunday’s match in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with three points on a 1-1-0 record.
FC Cincinnati 2:
2024 has gotten off to a rough start for Tyrone Marshall and Cincinnati as they enter Matchday 4 winless in 14th place in the Eastern Conference with one point on a 0-2-1 record.
After starting their season with a 1-1 draw and shootout loss against Chicago, Cincinnati 2 suffered back-to-back losses, where opponents outscored them six to two.
Three games into their 2024 campaign, FCC 2 ranks among the top of MLS NEXT Pro in some unflattering statistical categories. They’re in a three-way tie for most goals conceded with seven, a two-way tie for the second lowest goal differential with negative four, third for most fouls with 48, fourth in lowest pass accuracy with 78.6%, fifth in shooting accuracy with 32.3%, and are in a three-way tie for most yellow cards with a staggering 10.
Previous Meetings:
Wednesday marks the fifth meeting between Cincinnati and New England, a series Revolution II holds the historical advantage with a 2-1-1 record and one shootout victory.
Their inaugural meeting came on April 17th, 2022. Despite Arquimides Ordoñez and Avionne Flanagan netting two goals in the first 22 minutes, Revs II bounced back as a goal from Ryan Lima and a brace for Jack Panayotou, which included a stoppage time goal, propelled Revs II to a 3-2 comeback victory.
Both sides met again on May 22nd, 2022, where Marcos Dias’ lone goal in the 53rd minute led to Revs II securing three points with a 1-0 win.
Their first meeting of 2023 came on April 30th and was full of action. After rapid-fire goals from Damian Rivera and Marcos Dias put Revs II up 2-0 in the 19th minute, a brace from Arquimides Ordoñez led to Cincy leveling the game by the 31st minute. Jordan Adebayo-Smith regained the lead for New England in the 41st minute, but two goals from Salim Adams and Kai Thomas gave Cincy a 4-3 lead in the 61st minute. Rivera leveled the game in the 75th minute before a penalty kick from Dias gave Revs II a 5-4 lead in the 85th minute.
Just when it looked as if Revs II would secure all three points, an unfortunate own goal from Pierre Cayet led to leveling the game at five apiece as both sides earned a point and looked to gain an additional point in the shootout.
After six rounds, a conversion from Ben Awashie and a miss from Nicholas Samways led to Revolution II walking away with two points following a 5-4 shootout victory.
Their most recent meeting didn’t go Revolution II’s way as Adebayo-Smith’s stoppage time goal wasn’t enough to scrape the deficit, as Revs II suffered a 2-1 loss on the road on June 18th, 2023.
