Report: More Details On Leagues Cup Changes
Liga MX president notes changes were demanded by Mexican clubs
Leagues Cup will look a lot different in 2025.
Liga MX president Mikel Arriola said on Sunday that the pause on league competition to play in the tournament has been abandoned. Instead, Leagues Cup matches will be played in the middle of the week with league matches taking place on the weekend. This format is similar to what is seen across the global soccer landscape.
"We just approved the new Leagues Cup format,” he said. “We're no longer going to hold camps there [in the USA]. We'll play midweek so Mexican teams don't struggle, and Liga MX games will be played on the weekends.”
ESPN reported that Mexican clubs demanded change for the 2025 iteration of the tournament. The outlet has also previously reported that only 18 clubs from each league will participate in the mid-season tournament.
Get rid of the Leagues cup it hurts the teams that have to play in it having to play so much.
