Report: MLS Shifting to Divisional Format
See who the Revolution will reportedly join when the MLS enters a divisional format!
As Major League Soccer prepares to enter a new era with a new calendar, sources close to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio have indicated how a new divisional format could look.
While it’s not 100% confirmed, sources close to Bogert and Tenorio indicate that the New England Revolution will likely group alongside CF Montreal, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls, NYCFC, and the Philadelphia Union in the format.
Divisions will be key in this new era of MLS as inter-division teams will play each other twice (once home and once away), while playing non-division teams only once according to the report.
Additionally, Bogert and Tenorio report that the league is debating when to debut the proposed divisional format. The belief is that it will arrive in the summer of 2027, when MLS converts to a summer-spring calendar. However, sources indicate it could come as soon as the shortened “sprint season” prior to the calendar change.
