Recap: Revolution II Set Club Record For Longest Losing Streak
Revolution II set the club record for longest losing streak as they suffer their fifth-consecutive loss.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II returned to action Sunday evening following an extended break as they looked to snap a four-game losing streak while simultaneously looking for their first road win of the season.
Williams made two changes from the lineup that suffered a 2-1 loss to a shorthanded Huntsville City on July 10th. J.D. Gunn started in goal behind the backline of Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi, Tiago Suarez, Giovanni Calderón, and Damario McIntosh. Eric Klein, Maciel, and Patrick Leal started in the midfield behind the attacking trio of Joshua Bolma, Gevork Diarbian, and Alex Monis.
Diarbian nearly found the back of the net when he got on top of a ball sprung up the middle of the field. Diarbain went one-on-one with his defender and after creating some space, attempted to slot the ball into the upper-right corner, but his shot sailed wide of the net.
Controversy struck early, as it appeared Chicago’s Jean Diouf took Diarbian down inside the box. Despite the appearance, head referee Justin St. Pierre didn’t feel there was enough contact as play continued.
A poor pass in the backfield gave Revs II a golden opportunity in the 12th minute. Keeper Patrick Los attempted to get a poor pass from the right flank, but Los took a chunk out of Monis as St. Pierre pointed to the spot. On top of the penalty, Los received a yellow card for the infringement.
Monis, a former Chicago Homegrown, stepped up to the spot looking to find the opening goal. Monis sent the penalty to the bottom right side and in to give them an early 1-0 lead. A goal that propelled Monis to a Revs II leading six while marking his third goal against Chicago Fire II in 2024.
Chicago wasted no time finding an equalizer four minutes later. After having his initial shot saved, Lamonth Rochester got onto the rebound and drilled the ball past Gunn to level the game at one apiece. Things only got worse in the 20th minute when Jason Shokalook received Omari Glasgow’s pass inside the box and snuck a shot in to give Chicago their first lead of the evening.
A bizarre turn of events came in the 22nd minute when McIntosh’s cross into the center of the box deflected off Jaylen Shannon and into the net to level the game at two apiece.
But Revolution II’s night worsened in the 25th minute when Suarez took Jason Shokalook down inside the box as St. Pierre pointed to the spot. David Porebra stepped up to the spot, looking to add to his Golden Boot total when he buried the penalty kick into the back of the net to give Fire II a 3-2 lead. It marked his 12th goal of the 2024 season.
Calderón became the first Revs II player to enter the book as he saw a yellow card in the 35th minute after holding Jason Shokalook back. Leal saw yellow in the 43rd minute after fouling Vitaliy Hlyut.
Two changes came in the 76th minute as Brandonn Bueno and Robert Nichols III entered for McIntosh and Al-Hasnawi. It marked Bueno and Nichols’ first appearance of the 2024 season.
Despite a chaotic first half, Revolution II fell short in the comeback as Chicago Fire II walked away with the 3-2 victory at home.
Sunday’s loss marks a new low for New England Revolution II as their ongoing losing streak extended to five matches and marks the longest in Revolution II history.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II will look to stop the bleeding on Saturday, August 3rd, when they travel to Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia, as they’ll look for their first road win of 2024 when they face Atlanta United 2 at 8:30 PM ET.
