Recap: Revolution II 1 - New York Red Bulls II 0
Revs II's five game skid comes to an end thanks to a world-class goal from an unlikely source.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II returned to action Friday night as they hosted New York Red Bulls II inside Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
Friday’s match provided Revs II the opportunity to right the ship after a rough couple of weeks that saw them go winless in the past five matches with a 0-4-1 record and a -6 goal differential.
Williams made one change from last Thursday’s 3-1 loss to Columbus Crew 2. J.D. Gunn started in goal behind the back line of Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi, Hesron Barry, Tiago Suarez, and Damario McIntosh. Luka Borovic, Eric Klein, and Maciel were in the midfield behind the attacking trio of Gevork Diarbian, Patrick Leal, and Malcolm Fry.
Leal’s footwork led to a good opportunity in the 22nd when he took on his defender and nutmegged a ball upfield to Fry. The first teamer ran onto the ball and looked poised to slot the ball past Aiden Stokes, but the keeper came up big to keep Revs II off the board.
A poor clearance from the Red Bull defense led to a golden opportunity for Revolution II in the 40th minute. Maciel got under the falling ball unguarded and proceeded to drill a shot into the upper-right corner of the net to give Revs II a 1-0 lead.
New York’s Davi Alexandre saw the game’s first booking in the 49th minute after he was issued a yellow card following a foul on Diarbian. Juan Esteban joined Alexandre in the referee’s book in the 55th minute after fouling Fry.
Damario McIntosh’s 66th-minute cross nearly led to Revolution II finding another goal. McIntosh’s cross found Borovic inside the box, who leaped and headed the ball on frame, but Stokes was alert to the ball and got a hand on it to keep the game scoreless.
Richie Williams’ first changes came in the 75th minute when Colby Quiñones and Joshua Bolma replaced Tiago Suarez and Malcolm Fry. Another change came in the 86th minute when Alex Monis replaced Leal. Friday marked Monis’ first appearance with the club since returning from international duty with the Philippines.
J.D. Gunn came up huge in the 88th minute when he raced off his line to dive on a loose ball to keep the clean sheet intact.
Revolution II will look to build on the momentum generated on Friday when they square up against Crown Legacy FC on Sunday, June 23rd, inside Mark A. Ouellette Stadium at 6:00 PM ET.
Was an exciting game to watch. The Revs came up against a hot goal keeper as they had a few great chances. Well played game.
