While the New England Revolution are looking forward to Dylan Borrero recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in 2023, it's possible Borrero may not be the only U-22 player to join the lineup this season.

The Athletic reported last week that MLS is considering a mid-season rule change to "decouple" designated player (DP) and U-22 initiative (U-22) spots. The change would greatly increase the ability of MLS teams to spend on high transfer fees on players that could move in the summer months.

To understand this potential change and its significance, we unfortunately have to dive into the overly complicated world of MLS roster rules. I promise to try to simplify it and translate to English as best I can.
