The 2024 Major League Soccer Player’s Association salary data was released (albeit prematurely) and the numbers give an insight into the roster construction of the New England Revolution.
We will note that these numbers appeared on the MLSPA site but were since taken down. We believe the numbers are accurate but wanted to make sure our readers were informed.
Also note that the first number is a player’s base salary while the second is guaranteed compensation.
The Revolution have a guaranteed wage bill of $18,320,184.00. This slots them seventh in the league and is also a 7.7 percent increase from last year’s numbers.
New England’s DP’s are making a combined $7,409,583.00 in guaranteed compensation. While Carles Gil is making the most ($4,452,083.00), Giacomo Vrioni’s guaranteed compensation of $1,947,500.00 looks like a poor investment.
In terms of new players, it is worth noting that the salary numbers fro Xavier Arreaga ($775,000.00) and Aljaz Ivacic ($470,000.00) might seem large but we know that Ivacic is on the supplemental roster so it would appear that New England isn’t footing the whole bill. Paying a percentage of Arreaga’s salary also could have been a clause in the trade for the former Seattle Sounder.
In terms of overpayment, Tommy McNamara, Bobby Wood, Henry Kessler and Mark-Anthony Kaye stand out the most. McNamara and Wood have barely featured this season while Kessler and Kaye aren’t living up to the price tag.
The center back is also an interesting position considering that Dave Romney is firmly on the bench and Andrew Farrell seems primed for a bench role once New England is healthy. That is $1,405,417.00 for players who aren’t starting.
The Revolution roster seems to be bloated financially and not effectively constructed. While the likes of McNamara and Wood can be blamed on Bruce Arena, paying Henry Kessler over a million dollars and the acquisition of Henrich Ravas firmly fall on Curt Onalfo was in control for these deals.
So while Revolution fans have their pitchforks out for Caleb Porter, the data shows that Porter doesn’t appear to have a ton of wiggle room to make changes. New England is overpaying some players who have struggled to perform at a high level consistently. The Summer Transfer Window will be a crucial one to remedy the mistakes made and get the club back on track.
Curt has a nice smile for probably making a bundle for doing a lot of nothing.
This pic of Onalfo just jumpscared me
