LD Alajuelense Fire Manager
The move comes after the Revolution handed Alajulense a 4-0 loss in Leg One.
LD Alajuelense — the Revolution’s Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 opponent — made a major shakeup Thursday night, as the club announced Andrés Carevic would no longer serve as the Costa Rican side’s head coach.
Thursday’s move comes after the New England Revolution handed Alajuelense a 4-0 loss in Leg One of the series thanks to goals from Nick Lima, Esmir Bajraktarević, and a brace from Tomás Chancaly.
Following the disappointing loss, Alajuelense flew back to Costa Rica, where fans convened at the airport with signs, banners, and chants to voice their frustration over the coaching staff and players. Some fans resorted to throwing “coins and other items” at club representatives.
In their statement, Alajuelense thanked Carevic for his efforts with the club and for the successes he brought the club, which included a Concacaf Central American Cup, Concacaf League, Costa Rican Cup, and Costa Rican League titles.
In the meantime, assistant manager Martín Arriola will serve as the club’s interim head coach while the search for a new manager begins.
LD Alajuelense returns to Primera Division action on Sunday, March 10th, as they face AD Guanacasteca before hosting the Revolution inside Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto on Thursday, March 24th, at 8:00 PM ET.
